for the bureau in Washington,

Halsey Returns Marine Pla,
toon Sgt. Francis M. Halsey, 24,
whose mother resides in Browns-
boro, has returned to this coun
try after 31 months of duty in
the Pacific theater, according to
an announcement from his head
quarters. He Is temporarily sta
tioned at the marine corps base,
San Diego, awaiting reassign
ment and a furlough.
Jailed Russell Theodore Vin
cent, 119 Earhart street, was
fined $100 and sentenced to 30
days in jail yesterday in Justice
court on conviction of driving
while under the influence of in
toxicating liquor. Vincent was
involved in an accident which
occurred Saturday night at the
fairgrounds, city police reported.
He was also fined $10 and costs
for operating without brakes.
Interviews Postponed A visit
to Medford for the purpose of
interviewing prospective stu
dents of the University of Ore
gon by Mrs. Golda Wickham,
dean of women at the university,
which was scheduled for July 4
and 5, has been postponed until
July 12, it was announced today.
Those wishing to meet with
Dean Wickham are asked to call

able from 1 to 5 p. m. on June

Receives Purple Heart Mr.
and Mrs. Arne Christensen of
Newport, Oregon, formerly of
Medford, have received the Pur
ple Heart medal which was
awarded to their son, Ernest,
who is now in a fleet hospital re
covering from wounds received
on Okinawa. A graduate of
Medford high school with the
class of 1944, Christensen en
tered the marine corps a year
ago, and was with the first ma
rine division on the invasion of
Okinawa. Date of his wound Is
not known. Mr. and Mrs. Christ
ensen moved to Newport last
year.

Approximately 80 Boy Scouts
and leaders will leave tomorrow
for Camp McLoughlin at Lake
O' Woods for the first week of
the 19th annua! summer training
camp of the Crater Lake Area
Council, It was stated today by
Gordon Gilmore, executive sec
retary of the council and direc
tor of the camp.
Registration for the five weeks
of camping indicate that while
the first week Is light, the camp
will be filled the other four
weeks with a capacity 115 camp
ers, Gilmore said.
Busies chartered to transport
campers to the lake will leave
Scout Headquarters on East
Main street at 9 a. m., and boys
coming from Grants Pass should
be there at that hour, Gilmore
declared. Those from the Siski
you area of northern California
will be picked up in Ashland at
9:30 a. m.
Gilmore will be assisted at the
camp by Herald Ylbisaker and
a staff including Ralph Smith,
head cook; Miss Eleanor Coombe,
waterfront director; Miss Mar
garet Van Scooy, camp nurse;
and a junior staff of 12 young
men.
Program at the camp this year
will emphasize work for outdoor
merit badges and swimming,
Gilmore said.
Improvements completed at
the site this year include instal
lation of a new three-oven range
and electric lights in the dining
hall and hospital. The size of the
dining hall has been doubled.
Dates for the other camping
periods are July 11 to July 18,
July 18 to July 25, July 23 to
August 1, and August 1 to Au
gust 8.

Rooney. gave birth to a seven-
pound, five ounce son today at
the Jefferson Memorial hospital
here.
The father, recently promoted
to sergeant, was in Paris, France,
with a special service entertain
ment unit that has toured Ger
many and other European war
fronts.

Ashland, July 3 Final rites
for Charles L. Wimer, a resi
dent of Ashland for the past 23
years, were held here today. In
terment took place in the family
plot in Hargadine cemetery. He
passed away in Eureka, where
he had been visiting for the
past two months, last week.
Surviving are his wife, two
sons, Charles, Jr., Ashland, and
First Lt. George, Tyler, Tex.
and a daughter, Mrs. Betty Clev.

daughters, a brother, four sist
ers and two grandchildren also
