We have consulted three doc

condition. (F.J.M.)
If it is merely hammertoe and
no other developmental defect,
it should respond to treatment as
well as hammer-toe in older per
sons does. Congenital means the
child is born with it, and implies
nothing more.
If the toe can be straightened
out even partly, a suitable adhe
sive plaster splint may cure it.
Take a strip of adhesive plaster
one-nan inch wide, five or six
inches long, press the toe down
nearly or quite even with the
toes beside it. apply middle of
adhesive strap across the top
with adhesive surface up. and
apply each end under and around
toe on either side. This retains
the hammer-toe more nearly in
its proper position. The splint
may ne renewed once or twice a
week as needed, but must be
worn constantly for many
months to effect a cure.
In numerous Instances of ham
mer-toe in youths or young
adults dividing the contracted
tissues under the skin makes
straightening of the toe easier,
and then the adhesive plaster
may be worn to retain it in
straightened position.
unless some feature of the
case which your letter does not
make clear deters them, the doc
tors who said nothing can be
done for the child's hammer-toe
would seem unduly pessimistic.
Go ahead and try out the adhe
sive tape splint -and I'll wager
you will cure the hammer-toe In
a year.
