Game Goes for Three Extra
Innings; Littrell Parts
Downs Ordnance Shop.
Camp White extended its lead
in the city Softball league Friday
night by taking 6 to 5 victory
over lowly State Guard in 10 in
nings. The game was tied up at
5-5 at end of the seventh and not
until the tenth could the soldiers
put over the winning tally.
Littrell Parts took a 15 to l'l
win over Ordnance Shop in the
other half of the double header.
Camp White loaned State
Guard three players because the
Guard roster was short and al
most lost the game through their
generosity. The Guardsmen had
a big inning in the sixth when
Schwartkoff, who hit safely
three times out of three turns
at the plate, slammed out a home
run with runners on first and
third. Cullimore got a double
with the bases loaded for the
soldiers in the sixth. The Army's
winning run came when Lasater
doubled to score Hafey, who
previously bad walked.
Whipp, borrowed from Camp
White to do the pitching, struck
out 17 and walked one. Smith,
for the Army fanned four and
walked four while Mahr, Army
relief hurler, whiffed two and
passed five.
The Littrell Ordnance game
-was close all the way, being tied
In the second and fifth innings.
Earl Stella got a home run, sin
gle, triple and reached base on
an error out of four times at bat.
Keller, Littrell relief pitcher,
got a double to score two men in
the fifth and Vandergriff scored
two runners with a triple, also
in the fifth.
For Ordnance Shop, Appleton
got .three-bagger in the fourth
with one on and Elbe slammed
out a three-sack blow to score
two runners in the fifth frame.

Thumbs Up tied Sea Biscuit's

the Mexican champion, thrilled
the crowd by coming from last

Jockey Johnny Longden
brought the even-odds favorite
up fast, running second to
Stronghold as the 13 horse field
rounded the first turn.
Longden had the son of Blen

hand as they passed the half
way mark. Thumbs Up dropped
back as Texas Sandman and
Lou-Bre, Charles S. Howard's
bid for a third hundred grand
winner, set the pace.
Thumbs Up, with Longden
starting to use the whip,' moved
back into competition on the
far turn and took the lead as
they hit the stretch.
At this point, Gay Dalton, the
Cinderella horse, who had been
a disappointment in two pre
vious appearances here, made
his move and the crowd took
up the roar as the five-year-old
from south of the border started
eating up ground. The gay one
moved up between horses, but

going away. Gay Dalton didn't
have enough left to overtake the

Tommy Holmes of the Boston
Braves continued his one-man
batting show today when he col
lected a home run, triple and
single as the Braves beat the
St, Louis Cards, 8 to 4.
It was the 26th straight game
In which the Brooklyn-born
Brave outfielder has hit safely,
and his three hits in three times
up in which he drove four runs
home lifted his batting average
to .393, some 30 percentage
points above his closest compe
tition.
However, Holmes had to be
spectacular today to wrest hon
ors from teammate Wietelmann,
who cracked out a three-run
homer.
Hy Vandenberg was wild but
effective . in the clutch as he
pitched the Chicago Cubs to a
5 to 3. decision over the New
York Giants. He allowed only
five hits, but passed six Giants
on walks and hit two batsmen.
His control returned with men
on base' and 11 Giants were
stranded. A three-run fifth in
ning won the game for Chicago.
Ben Chapman's debut as man
ager of the Philadelphia Phillies
was not a gala event from the
Philly point of view, although
the Cincinnati Reds enjoyed it
hugely. The Reds thumoed
Schanz and Barrett for nine runs
in the seventh inning and went
on to a 13 to 5 victory.
Pittsburgh plays at Brooklyn
tonight. The entire American
league was scheduled for twi.
