Hal Newhouser Pitches
Detroit To 5 To 2 Win
New York, June 29 (U.R)
The Detroit Tigers were getting
alo.ig nicely in the pennant race
today with the aid of Hal New
houser. Restoring Detroit's one-game
lead over the Yankees yesterday,
Newhouser beat the pesky Sen
ators, 5 to 2, on six hits for his
seventh straight win.
.A six-run fifth inning gave the
Browns margin for a 9 to 4 vic
tory over the Yankees at St.
Louis, ending their five-game
losing streak and snapping New
York's winning streak at seven.
Frankie Hayes tied the Major
league durability record for
catchers at Cleveland, working
his 217th straight game as Jim
Bagby shut out the Athletics, 11
toO.
The Cubs trimmed Brooklyn's
National lead to three games,
beating the Dodgers, 11 to 8.
The Braves, up to their spe
cialty of winning games in the
clutch, beat the Reds at Boston,
7 to 6. League Leading Hitter
Tommy Holmes delivered safely
In his 24th straight game.
The Cards batted around in
the fourth to score five runs,
enough to beat the Phils at Phil
adelphia, 6 to 1.
Nick Strincevich won his sev
enth game for Pittsburgh, beat
ing the Giants, 3 to 1, at New
York.

CALUMET COURSE
Chicago, June 29 (U.R) It
was the field against Byron Nel
son again today as 42 of the na
tion's top golfers teed off in the
opening round of the $10,000
Victory National Open at Calu
met Country Club.
But Nelson, golfdom's leading
money maker who has won 10
of the last 16 major tournaments,
feared no man as much as he
feared the tricky greens on the
6,657-yard Calumet course.
Jug McSpaden, the Sanford,
Me., putting artist and Nelson's
most persistent rival, is defend
ing champion in the open and
the one entry given a good
chance to beat Nelson. During
the preliminary pro-lady, pro-
amateur and pro-senior tourna
ments of the Victory National,
he fired a blistering 67, five un
der par, to show his fondness for
the course.
Paavo Katonen, the Finnish
southpaw, and Jack Lipscomb
won their double main event
bouts at Medford armory last
night while Milt Olson went to
a no-fall draw with Kenny
Ackles in the opener.
Katonen took advantage of
Leone's sore leg to gain a two-out-of-three
fall decision over
the New York bad boy, keeping
Leone in trouble most of the
time.
Lipscomb wasted .no time in
trouncing "Gorgeous" George
Wagner, who now has a per
manent wave in his long black
hair. Lipscomb lost the first fall
in the second round by a -drop
kick and body press but took the
second in 30 seconds when Wag
ner missed another drop kick
and won the final tumble. in 15
seconds of the fourth round with
a press after giving Wagner sev
eral clips on the' jaw.
Promoter Mack Lillard an
nounced there will be no wres
tling at the armory next Thurs
day night.
Suspension Sought
For Bobby Ruffin
Trenton, N. J., June 29 (U.R)
All state , athletic commissions
which have working agreements
with New Jersey were asked to
day to suspend Bobby Ruffin,
Astoria, N. Y., boxer because of
his "unwarranted delay" begore
appearing in a 10-round bout at
Elizabeth, N. J., which he lost
Tuesday night to Freddie
Archer.
The lightweight boxer sat out
side in a car, refusing to go into
the arena until he was permit
ted to use six-ounce instead of
eight-ounce gloves, Hall said.
Hall said the request could not
be granted because New Jersey
laws permits nothing lighter
than eight ounce gloves.

A large crowd of anglers are
expected to go to Diamond Lake
over the week-end and for the
Fourth of July but won't set any
records as far as fishing is con
cerned, according to Al Piche in
his weekly piscatorial report.
Angling is now about average
for this time 'of year but is ex
pected to improve after the
algae settles. Fly fishing is some
what improved during the eve
nings, with gray hackle and
black gnat flies, size six, bring
ing best results.
Sid Blood, manager of Fish
Lake resort, reports the road in
to the lake is in good shape and
that fishing is good. Trolling,
with large flashers and worms,
is bringing biggest fish and larg
est catches.
Hiatt Lake has been good for
crappies and lue gills the past
two weeks while bass fishing is
spotty from day to day. Flics
with red or yellow attached are
real crappy-getters.
Salmon fishing in Rogue Riv
er is still spotty with a few being
taken around Trail with spinners
in sixes fiv and six, most any
finish but bigger fish were
caught on 50-50 finishes. Sev
eral jack salmon were taken the
past week on spinners and flies.
Trout fishing is good with flies
in riffles or choppy water, close
to shore, bringing results. Any
hackle fly will get fish at the
present time.
All small streams are improv
ing for flies and eggs. There is
no special choice on small
streams for the week-end, for all
are good..
Our bouquet of June roses for

plishment in the local sports

Guard in the city league Wed
