Your Health and It's Care
By OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D.
Readers ahould address Inquiries tot Dr. William Brady.
26& d Camino. Beverly Hills. Calii.
COME, COME, CHILDREN,
A week or two before the
president's death I prepared for
publication in my column an
article on cere
bral hemor
rhage, in which
I explained, as
firmly and
gently as pos
sible, that any
one who is or
thinks he is
subject to very
high blood
pressure (10 0
or over) owes
it to himself
Dr. Brady (or herself) to
have a physician examine the re
tina at least once a year for
signs of minute hemorrhages
from the arterioles which are
visible through the retinoscope"
the gadget the doctor uses to
peer into the interior of the eye.
The retina is the sensitive film
at the back of the eye, and with
such an instrument, called re
tinoscope or ophthalmoscope,
the physician can see not only
the optic nerve but the minute
blood vessels which show scler
osis or hardening long before
hardening of the arteries (arteri
osclerosis) can be diagnosed by
ordinary physical examination.
The article was promptly re
jected. Editorial advisers who
know from long experience
what readers want, and to whose
judgment even this bull in the
china shop has learned to defer,
feared the article might frighten
too many readers who have or
imagine they have high blood
pressure.
But upon the president's sud
den passing came editorial tele
grams asking for an article on
cerebral hemorrhage! I felt
little interest in the subject then,
but I dug up the carbon copy for
the rejected article and re-submitted
it. How many papers
printed it uncensored I don't
know. How many readers were
frightened by it I don't know. I
know only that, so far, nobody
has told me he or she derived
any benefit or help from the
article. Two correspondents have
told me it frightened them or
some one in the family.
I his is painful and discourae-
ing to me. I could file Mrs. L.
F. C.'s complaint away and slip
out the garden gate and through
the patio between my playroom
and the studio, to forget this and
other worldly cares for an after
noon on the bowling green God
bless the loafer who invented
lawn bowling but I know too
well how it will haunt me inde
finitely. There are a dozen sins
I could commit without overbur
dening my conscience, but the
thought of this mother being
scared sick by my singular lack
of sympathy, as I happened to
catch the poor soul at a time
when her daughter was not
there to protect her, that I can't
dispel. It seems to show that
the I. Q. of the general reading
public is still childlike, so far as
physiology, hygiene, sanitation
and health are concerned.
