LIBERATED PARIS
INFLATIONJE 1DDEN
Pair of Shoes Costs $130,
Kitchen Chair $20; Poor
Fare Badly in Food Marts.
By Dudley Ann Harmon
United Press Correspondent
Paris, June 21 tU.R) Liberat
ed Paris, once the fashion and
night life center of the world, is
an impoverished city today, rid
den by inflation and gouging
black-marketeers.
It is a city where a pair of
leather shoes costs $130, a bath
tub $500 and an ordinary kitchen
chair $20. And where a discon
solate chambermaid says sadly:
Tough For Rich Now
"The only difference In ten
months of liberation is that now
it's even getting tough for the
rich."
Today, even wealthy engaged
couples haunt the famous Pari
sian "flea markets" in search of
second-hand linen, furniture and
table ware. To equip a five-room
apartment even modestly would
cost a honeymooning couple $10
000.
All last winter a man with
money could eat black market
food every night, whereas the
poor frequently went for six
weeks and more without even a
morsel of horseflesh. The re
sults were apparent in the April
elections, which showed a mark
ed swine to the left.
Now there are many In Paris
who fear the communists will
take over the government. And
there are as many more who fear
they won't.
food Situation Bad
Meanwhile, the ordinary Pari
sian housewife teeters to market
en her uncomfortable wooden
shoes to find that the food situ
ation Is no better than ever, with
the exception of fats.
The average stenographer
earning perhaps $60 a month,
cannot afford strawberries priced
at $1.60 a pound. But her chief
complaint is not over such lux
uries as strawberries.
She Is irritated by the irregu
larity of her standard rations.
She may be able to get two
pounds of potatoes this week and
then none at all for a month.
On the other hand, there Is
plenty of bread and meat ration
has gone up from nothing at all
to enough for one meal per week.
Last week Parisians received
two-fifths of a pound of Ameri
can lard and government hopes
to increase this allotment.
Black Mart Worries
The government, too, is trying
bard to stamp out the black mar
ket. The food ministry now has
ordered restaurants to serve only
one meat meal weekly and steps
are being taken to force farmers
to sell their produce many
farmers had been holding back
supplies on the claim that prices
weren't high, enough to pay for
their fodder.
But most Frenchmen are skep
tical of the new program. They
are convinced there will be no
real improvement until more
meatsugar and fats are import
ed, along with machinery and
fertilizer for the farmers.
Returning prisoners of war who
found the rich were getting suits
for $300 apiece, whereas the
government was unable to out
fit them, simply raided the de
partment stores and took what
they needed.
Now the government has
taken over the clothing stores in
Paris, but the liberated prisoners
still are dissatisfied because they
can't draw the double meat ra
tions to which their special ra
tion cards entitle them.

GIRL SCOUT GAMP
E
"Because of the splendid co
operation with the Red Cross
swimming program, the Rogue
River . Transit company and
Dodge's Riding academy the
Girl Scout day camp program
schedule has been possible,"
Mrs. Marjorie Hopkins, Scout
executive secretary, stated today.
"Over 160 different girls have
registered. The average dally
attendance, in spite of the unusu
ally hot weather has been over
140.
"With this large attendance
several additional counselors
have been added to the staff and
others are needed. In checking
the registrations it has been
found that one-fourth of the
campers are not Girl Scouts,
which proves the program is an
"all eirls " dav camn.
"Other girls in the community
who are not Girl Scouts may sun
register for the second week of
day camp," the secretary concluded.
A snecial feature of Thurs
day's oroeram were game con
tests in each unit, presented by
Mrs. Olive Floyd of the County
Recreation club.
