According to some competent
physicians there are occasional
cases of pollinosis or allergic re
action manifested as coryza, Itch
ing, irritation in nose and eyes,
burning and reddening of eyes,
watery nasal secretion , stuffi
ness, perhaps cough and wheez
ing, duo to grass pollens, even to
the pollen of Timothy hay
but the pollens of the
grasses, clover, alfalfa are
heavier, larger grains and are
carried by insects and not by the
wind. Hence one inhales such
pollens only in exceptional cir
cumstances. The pollens respons
ible for most pollinosis (hay
fever) are lighter, very small
grains and these pollens are car
ried mainly by the wind or air,
and so the great majority of
such allergic reactions are due to
the fine pollens of such plants as
ragweed, wild oats, live oak,
scrub oak, orchard grass, cotton
wood, Russian thistle, plantain,
sheep sorrel and other wind
borne pollens.
Contrary to a popular notion
the conspicuous goldenrod sel
dom causes trouble in most in
stances reactions ascribed to it
ere really due to the unnoticed
ragweed that grows wherever
goldenrod grows.
Rose pollen, too, is compara
tively heavy and large grained,
carried by insects and not in the
sir or by the wind. So "rose
cold" is another misnomer for
pollinosis. -
Take away all the ragweed
pollen common ragweed,
prairie ragweed, western rag
weed, bur ragweed, giant rag
weed it would require an
enormous fleet of 10-ton trucks
to take away all the ragweed
pollen in the atmosphere in the
season and what have you le(t?
Just an occasional mild to doubt
ful case of watery nose and
blear-eyes, a spring or early sum
mer distemper, sure enough, but
nothing to write to the paper
bout.
Ah, but wait till Friday, Aug.
10, '43, for it is at precisely 7:10
a. m. that day that the Big
Sneeze is scheduled to start.
Good bye, now, more later.
