Homesick GFs Find Czechs
More Like Folks Back Home
By Leo S. Dlshar
United Press Correspondent
Prague, June 14 (U.PJ Home
sick GI s are finding Czechs and
the Czech homeland more Amer
ican than anything they have yet
seen on the continent.
There are only few Yank
soldiers in Prague, but smiling,
friendly Czechs crowd around
them in ihe streets and wave as
they race by in their open jeeps.
The Czechs are anxious to try
out their rusty English they
. were forced to speak German
throughout the nazi occupation
and they are continually ask
ing the GI's for English-language
newspapers and books.
Few U. S. Flags
A scattering of American flags
fly in Prague, but most of the
flags in this bullet-scarred capi
tal are Russian and Czechoslo
vak. Likewise, most cars in the
streets are captured German
machines carrying Russian offi
cers and American jeeps crowd
ed with "Ivans" everybody's
name for the Russian GI's.
To an American correspondent
accustomed to seeing only Yanks
riding jeeps, it is strange to see
them driven by Ivans with their
loose-fitting, leather-belted field
jackets and heavy black boots,
all. carrying side arms and sub
machine guns.
Cardboard Russian street signs
are everywhere and the Ivans
drive their jeeps around with the
same reckless abandon for which
American soldiers are notorious.
Last night, in front of the Am
bassador Hotel which is the

equivalent of London's Grosven
or Square so far as the Yanks in
Prague are concerned I saw
four GI's call out to a lone Rus
sian soldier.'
Everybody Happy
"Hey Ivan, come here," they
shouted.
The grinning Russian came
over and Czech passersby crowd
ed around them. Everybody be
gan talking Czech, Russian and
English all at once, with the ci
vilians looking on and beaming.
The doughboys finally slapped
Ivan on the back and marched
off happily. Ivan was grinning
too, although no one had under
stood a word anyone else had
said.
The small ffrnun nf AmprlnnnK
here, like their counterparts in
Pilsen and elsewhere in Czecho
slovakia, were quick to make
friends with the Czech eirls. Ynn
frequently see them walking arm
m arm mrougn tne streets in the
warm late evenings.

A railway cross-tie is a carefully fabricated
item of equipment. Manufactured from
selected timber, ties utilized by Great North
em are sawed to specific size and pressure
treated with preservatives to lengthen life.
There are 3,250 ties to every mile of Great
Northern's main line track. Approximately
lj million new ties from the timberlands
along the railway were added in 1944.
Literally, they are the ties that bind Great
Northern to the vast empire it has served
so dependably in peace and in war.
