BACK FROM DEAD
TO TELL
Editor's Note: The follow
ing dispatch was delayed in
transmission by field censorship.)
By RAY COLL, Jr.
Field Hospital, Okinawa, May
5 (U.R) Pvt. Richard A. Mc-
Curdy, Boise, Ida., came back
from the dead today to tejl how
for three days and two nights
Japanese soldiers gouged his
eyes, picked his body for souv
enirs and kicked and rolled him
about to see if he were alive.
The lanky six foot ex-sawmill
hand, now serving with Com
pany E, 7th Division, was hit in
the back and arm by 50-calibre
machine gun bullets Just inside
enemy lines.
While he lay there seemingly
dead, Japanese souvenir hunters
took his gun and used it to
fire back at Americans; took his
rations and water canteen and
his billfold. Occasionally they
stuck their thumbs in his eye
balls and under his cheek bones.
They kicked and rolled his body
to see if he were alive.
Maggots Came
McCurdy endured all this
thinking each moment was his
last, but it was when maggots
began eating around the wound
in his back that he really was
frightened that and the con
stant machine gun. mortar and
artillery fire pouring back and
forth across him which kicked
dirt in his face with each blast.
On the night of the third day
during a rain storm he managed
to crawl 200 tortuous yards back
into our lines where medics
heard his cry and rushed out to
take him in.
This morning at this base hos
pital he told his story in a quiet
matter of fact voice.
McCurdy's platoon pushed off
the morning of May 1 to take a
little knoll about 200 yards
away.
"We had got only about 20
yards when we started receiving
intense machine gun, mortar and

rifle fire from both flanks n
well as the front,
"We ran down a little ridge
and thought we had cover there,
I saw a little hole in the side
of the bank and started to crawl
toward it. Suddenly I felt like
my legs had been cut off.
"I didn't know it at the time,
but later found I had been hit
in the back. I kept crawling
and the Japs spotted me and I
got another slug in my right
arm, but managed to reach the
hole." .
