SOLON PAY RAISE
Washington, June 8 U.R)
Members of the House, who vot
ed themselves a $2,500 tax-free
expense account, were pleased1
but a bit wary today over Presl-
dent Truman's suggestion that
they vote themselves $3,000 to
$15,000 annual pay raise.
Mr. Truman told a news con
ference yesterday that If con
gressmen wanted more money
they should come straight out
and raise their salaries. He said
he would sign a bill giving mem
bers between $13,000 and $25,
000 a year. They now get $10,
000. The roll call by which the
House approved the $2,500 ex
pense item for each member In
cluded the following votes:
Republicans for Ellsworth
and Mott, Oregon.
Republicans against Angell,
Oregon.
EX-GERMAN CAPTIVE
HOME ON FURLOUGH
Cpl. William Kime, who was
taken prisoner by the Germans
Dec. 17 during the battle of the
, Belgium bulge, arrived in Med
ford Monday for a 60-day fur
lough with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Wilbur Kime, Griffin Creek
and other members of the fam
ily. Cpl. Kime was In a tank -de-'
troyer unit when taken prison
er. He was released in April
after having been In various
camps.
Upon expiration of his fur
lough the corporal will report
at Santa Barbara for reassign
ment. A sister slated yesterday
that the corporal has already re
gained the weight which he lost
on a prison diet and "looks fine
now." His brother, Pvt. John
Kime, Is in Italy with the army.
Baptist Church To
Celebrate Sixtieth
Anniversary Sunday
The First Baptist Church of
Medford will celebrate its 60th
anniversary Sunday with a full
day's program to be carried out
at the church. Fifth street and
North Central avenue.
Joint opening services of the
Bible school at 9:45 a. m. start
the program. At the 11 a. m.
services Dr. Vance Webster, pas
tor of the church at Eugene, will
be guest speaker. His theme will
be "Christianity For Today's
World." Appropriate music will
be furnished by the choir. '
A covered dish Fellowship din
ner will be served at 1 p. m. and
will be followed by a special program.
Dr. Webster will again speak
at the evening services, at' 8
o'clock. His topic will be "Life
Made Beautiful." There will be
special music and song service.
Mrs. Elma Wilson is general
chairman in charge of the day's
arrangements.
Student Enrollment
At Vacation Bible
School On Increase
Vacation Bible schools con
ducted by 10 Medford churches,
cooperating with the Ministerial
Association, report through the
committee that the attendance
has about doubled that of last
year, with many of the churches
filled to capacity.
The schools will continue
through the following week ev
ery morning from 9:00 to noon.
Many of the schools are planning
an outdoor picnic at the ciose of
the last session on Friday, June
15.
The Juniors and Intermediates
have taken advantage of the fa
cilities of the Junior Red Cross
work of the city to make pic
tures and articles for men in the
armed forces. Parents are urged
by the Mimstrial Association
committee to continue their sup
port by sending the children reg
ularly next week.

dance will be given Saturday
night, June 9, by the Girl Scouts.

SGT. SHELLEDY KILLED "
OVER NORWAY, IS WORD
A wire received Wednesday by
Mrs. Winabelle Shelledy, 27
Newtown street, stated that her
husband, Sgt. Fayette Shelledy,
had been killed in action April
7 over Norway. Sgt. Shelledy,
B-24, waist gunner with the 8th
air force since December 17 of
1944, had previously been re
ported as missing.
The sergeant, 27, was a son of
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Shelledy of
Richmond, Calif. His wife Is
making her home in Medford
with her mother, Mrs. Mary
James.

Notice of School Election Upon Question of Increasing Tax Levy
Over Amount Limited by Section 11. Article XI. State Constitution
Notice is hereby given that an electio'n will be held in School
District No 9. of Jackson County, Stnte of Oreenn. at School House
in said school district, for the Uirpo?e of submitting to the legal
voters of said district the question of increasing the tax lew for
the year 1945 over the amount limited by section 11, article XI,
of the Constitution of Oregon.
The reasons for increasing such levy are:
Alterations and improvements to present plant.
Added expenses to operation.
The amount of tax, in excess of the 6 limitation, proposed to
be levied for said year is 525.602 77.
