HERE ON LEAVE
Veteran of more than 20 years
naval service and wearer of the
purple heart, George H. Rogers,
warrant machinist, is in Medford
on a 20-day leave visiting his
sister, Mrs. H. O. Colburn, 704
West 10th street. Rogers just re
turned from overseas where he
participated In five invasions.
At the beginning of the war
he was serving on the famed
cruiser Marblehead and after
being severely wounded in
action was taken to a hospital on
Java. There he was treated by
Commander C. M. Wassell, the
noted naval doctor who was por
trayed in the recent movie. "The
Story of Dr. Wassell."
Rogers, along with 40 other
patients, 12 of whom were naval
casualties, was evacuated by
British motor transport, under
the direction of the well known
doctor, to the Java coast. From
Java they were taken to a hos
pital in Australia by a small
Dutch steamer. Rogers was later
removed to a naval hospital at
Mare Island, Calif., and was re
leased in August, 1942.
Besides the purple heart he
wears the presidential unit cita
tion, and ribbons for the Yangtze
campaign, China service, De
fense ribbon with one bronze
star, Pacific - Asiatic, African
with two bronze stars, Philippine
Invasion, and the good conduct
ribbon with three bronze stars.
Barnyard Spats
Develop As Cat
Won't Eat Worms
The old White Leghorn hen
belonging to Herman Offenbach-
er of the Applegate, which three
weeks ago adopted three mother
less kittens, now only has one
ward, and It is turning out to
be something of a problem cat.
One kitten died and the other
was given to neighbors.
The remaining kitten starting
to show feline, instead of chick
en instincts, argues with its
foster-mother over food. The kit
ten will not eat the fat worms.
scratched up with great ado by
the old hen. This has resulted
in a couple of lively barnyard
spats, with another chicken eat
ing the worm.
Offenbacher plans to separate
the pair, as apparently the kit
ten's only interest in the hen is
the warmth of her body and
shelter of her wings when cold,
end full of what it wants to eat.
ASHLANDER DIES OF
WOUNDS ON OKINAWA
George E. King of Ashland
has been informed that his son,
Pfc. Cecil King died of wounds
on Okinawa April 23. No further
details went sent the father. The
family formerly resided in the
Bellview district.
Gordon J. Cizek, Jr., PhM3c,
has been wounded in action ac
cording to a letter received from
the navy by his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Gordon J. Cizek, 12S North
Holly street. Cizek was assigned
to duty with the first marine
division.
OUSTED AS HEAD
OF
Portland, Ore., June 8 U.PJ
The Rev. Jerry Owen, undenom
inational evangelist whose court
troubles involving moral charges
have kept him In hot water with
his flock, today was removed as
president-evangelist of the We
The People Crystal Lake Gospel
Park.
Owen conducted a summer
camp at Crystal Lake and did
much of his preaching by radio.
The trustees said proof of his
failing to live up to the Scriptur
al commandments was given by
his conviction on a disorderly
conduct charge involving morals
last February.
Last month, Mrs. Jean Kelly
Wheeler, a Los Angeles waitress,
filed a paternity suit against
Owen, naming him the father of
her 2V$ year old son.
The 3 1 year - old self - styled
'walking Bible" is widely known
for his evangelical work in the
northwest.
He denied any immorality in
the disordely conduct arrest, ex
plaining he was merely paying
a social call to a long-time friend.
Miss Frances McCarty, 22. Po
lice testified that they had diffi
culty entering the downtown ho
tel room and found Owen clad
only in trousers and Miss Mc
Carty in pajamas and negligee.
The trustees charged in the
ouster resolution that Owen had
misrepresented the details of his
arrest when he addressed his followers.
TROOP MOVEMENT
TAXES RAILROADS
Washington, June 8 U.R
Fa:ed with the greatest transpor
tation crisis in the country's his
tory, the government today put
in a rush order for construction
of more than 2,000 troop-carry
ing railroad cars and told civil
ians without important business
to stay off trains in the next 10
months.
Meanwhile, preparations were
being made to take over in the
next 60 days about 2,000 Pull
man sleepers half the total
and an undisclosed number of
coaches for the mass movement
of troops from the east coast to
Pacific ports.
This was revealed to the
United Press today after Presi
dent Truman as his press confer
ence yesterday expressed con
cern over the magnitude of the
forthcoming cross-country trans
portation job for the Japanese
war.
