American communists appeared
today to be gunning for W. Aver
ell Harrlman, the United States
ambasador to Moscow.
Harrlman Inherited a great
deal of money including a big
block of stock in the Union Pa
cific railroad. But he was a con
sistent Roosevelt for -p resident
man. In 1043 he was sent by
the late president to Moscow.
Change Claimed

In a special article has charged
that since the defeat of Germany
Harriman has disclosed pro
found hostility to the Soviet
Union."
The communist organ cited
broadcast last week by Johannes
Steel, a radio commentator, In
which Harriman was alleged to
have said that the "interests of
the United States and the Soviet
Union are irreconcilable."
By implication the paper said
Harriman feels that the United
States should declare war on
Russia or, at the least, adopt pol
icies designed to- challenge the
apread of communism in Europe
and elsewhere.
If the Dally Worker reflects
the opinion of the Kremlin
and It usually does It would ap
pear that Harriman is In a diplo
matic blind alley.

The attack on him is accom
panied by a new development in
the communist party Una here.
The development is a challenge,
direct or Implied, to United
States foreign policy as it has
been since President Truman
cucceeded to the White House on
April 12.
The procedure Is to make ob
jections on specific counts of for
eign policy accompanied by Im
plications that they are devia
tions from foreign policy as es
tablished during the Roosevelt
administration.
In a resolution prepared by
the national committee of the
Communist Political Association
and printed In the Daily Worker
there Is this passage:
"It is Imperative that the
American people resolutely sup
port every effort of the Truman
administration to carry forward
Roosevelt's program for victory,
peace, democracy and 60,000,000
jobs. It is equally necessary that
tha people sharply criticize all
Hesitations to apply this policy
and vigorously oppose any con
cessions to the reactionaries."

City, 111., working together for
the past 13 years, will begin a
series of meetings at the Assem
bly of God church, 11 Newtown
street, Sunday.
Evangelist Smith, a former
Baptist, has been preaching for
the Assembly of God movement
Inr the past 18 years. A special
feature of their services is tholr
singing which Is a ministry In
itself, according to the Rev. G.
O. Baker, pastor of the local
church.
In 1941 they ministered at the
northern California state camp,
one of the largest meetings of
its kind on the we.it coast. They
recently conducted a campaign
at the Full Gospel Church in
Ashland.
Mr. Smith Is a strong funda
mental Gospel preacher and his
messages are well accepted by

(Delayed) In desperation, the
Japanese are reloasing large
numbers of mines In the Pacific
as a last-resort measure against
American naval power.
I have seen these mines float
ing in the water all the way
from here to the coastal waters
of Japan, where this task force
steams at will and without fear
of more than token resistance
from the Kamikaze "Divine
Wind" suicide corps.
No Harm Done
In all cases, the mines have
been exploded harmlessly in the
water without damage to our
ships. The enemy presumably
hoped some of them might hit
and sink an American vessel,
' It is generally agreed around
this force that luck has been on
our side. We haven't hit one of
these mines yet, but the explo
sions they make when we set
them off are terrific. We know
they probably would do some
damage if we hit them.
Indiscriminate use of mines
fits well Into the current defense
policy of the enemy employ
ment of suicide planes, suicide
boats and flying human-controlled
bombs. Conventional
methods of destruction have been
cast aside. '
The Japanese could not beat us
with power, so they are trying
luck and praying for a "Divine
Wind," such as the one that
helped turn back a Mongol fleet
centuries ego.
Slightly less than 1,000,000 cat
tle were reported in Washington
state on January 1, 1945, a four j
per cent decrease from the rec
ord high of last year.
