THE ITCH GOES AROUND
When my nine-year-old. daugh
ter broke out with itch (writea a
reader from up north she does
not explain
how she knew
the child had
itch scabies,
a three - sylla
ble word, pro
nounced s k a-

on the sua) i
rubbed her
with sulphur
' TV
and lard for
two weeks.
Seeing she was
Dr. Brady
getting worse
instead of better I gave her one-
half teaspoonful of sulphur and
Jelly the first and fourth day and
she was relieved and her skin
cleared beautifully. Would it be
a eood policy to give her this
tonic every spring? (Mrs. B.H.)
If the child had the itch (sca
bies) it is unlikely that merely
rubbing with sulfur and lard
would cure the disease, although
it might irritate the skin and ag
gravate whatever the primary
skin trouble may be. Of course,
if the trouble was really the itch
taking sulphur internally could
have had no influence upon it.
Nine times out of ten a skin
eruption or breaking out that
itches a good deal is not scabies.
Scabies, old fashioned "seven-
year" itch, properly treated can
be cured in twenty-four hours.
Being 'due to the itch mite, a
minute insect barely visible to
the naked eye, which burrows in
the skin and deposits its eggs in
the burrows, it is highly conta
gious through direct contact with
objects which have been contam-
' inated by a person with the dis
ease clothing, papers, books,
toilet articles, hats (trying on),
doorknobs, hanging straps, chair
arms. etc.
The diagnosis of scabies is not
easy unless the physician is fam
iliar with it and on the alert. One
reason why the itch goes around
in the spring and early summer
Is that a case has escaped recog
nition and the patient innocently
carries the disease into a com
munity where he or she goes to
work or play.
It is doubtful whether any
new-fangled remedy or treat
ment for the itch is superior to
sulfur ointment, provided this is
properly used. Sulfur ointment
is not Just sulfur and lard, but
the official U. S. P. sulfur oint
ment containing approximately
15 sulfur and the sulfur is ex
tinguished so finely incorporat
ed in the ointment base that no
particle can be seen or felwlth
the fingers. At least half a pound
of the ointment is necessary.
First a prolonged hot bath and
an all-over scrub with soap and
