THE TRICK OF
In the talk about the "gas at
tack" bugbear the other day
made it clear, I hope, that (a)
bloating or dls-
tension o
stomach or In
testine by gas
(or air or both)
occurs as
oonsequence of
colic, muscle
spasm in wall
of stomach, In
testine or gall
bladder or
gall-duct and
not as the
Dr. Brady cause of tne
discomfort or distress; and (b)
that in no circumstance does or
can gas (or air or both) distend
the stomach or intestine enough
to "press on the heart" and sert
ously interfere with the function
or action of the heart; and (c)
that cases to the contrary not
correctly diagnosed not that
can tell by divination what the
trouble really is. It requires
' careful and repeated examina
tions and perhaps a period of ob-
servat on by the physician to
diagnose most of these cases. At
best it is stupid to monkey with
such distress without a diagnosis.
Bellyache is a tricky conv
plaint, anyway, as we shall see
later, and my advice is the same
for man, woman or child: Have
nothing whatever to do with it.
If anything purporting to be
bellyache should happen to you,
don't do a thing, don't take a
physic, don't dull your senses (If
any) ' with dope of any kind.
Leave everything to your family
physician. Perhaps we had bet
ter get on with the air swallow
ing trick now, and have belly
ache later.
One patient counted the num
ber of eructations af fer a meal of
toast and tea 1411 .Another pa
tient (I quote from Diagnosis and
Treatment of Digestive Diseases,
by Gorge M. Niles, M. D.) whose
case was recorded by Vander
hoqf belched over 5000 times in
24 nours, eructating more than
200 liters or fifty gallons of air.
Air, not gas, Is the motive
power In most cases of extraor
dinarily noisy or impressive
belching. The individual con
sciously or unconsciously swal
lows air until a considerable vol
ume accumulates in gullet or
stomach. Then for his or her
own amusement or for the sake
of Impressing anxious relatives
or attendants, gets it oft the
stomach again. Not all belchlngs
or eructations are of this nature,
but certainly the alr-swallowlng
trick explains excessive belching
in many instances. ;
Sometimes a patient who Is
unduly worried or alarmed by
his stomach, heart or other real
or imaginary Internal trouble
may be seen to swallow some air
every few seconds. Sometimes

MILITARY TRIALS
T
London, May 29 (U.R) Prime
Minister Churchill, answering
demands in Commons for
speedup in the punishment of
Axis war criminals, said today
that the big powers were inclin
ing toward assigning the trials
to interallied military tribunals.
: Laborltes fired some of their
sharpest darts at Churchill- on
the matter of how soon war crim
inals ' would be brought to Jus
tice.. He refused to be disturb
ed, however, and Insisted that
the .trials "ought not to be pro
ceeded with until they. are. prop
erly: arranged and ' a method
agreed upon between the great
powers."
Dealing- -with other matters
during the question ' hour !, in
Commons, Churchill sidestepped
a request ior connrmauon or
denial of reports that Russia -is
moving German men into the
Soviet Union to rebuild war-de
stroyed cities. . "
i Herbert Morrison,, who last
week left the post of home' min
ister in the coalition govern
ment, asked . Churchill "How
long it will take to dispatch Field
Marshal Goerihg to his proper
destination:"
At one point, Laborlte Moe-
Iwyn Hughes inquired ironi
cally: '
"Will you see that these crim
inals are given adequate sup
plies of chicken, wine and cham
pagne?"
The house cheered when Lt.
Col. Anthony Marlowe, Conser
vative, asked:
"Don't you think that In rela
tion to the notorious Nazi lead
ers, the tangled machinery of
trial is an inappropriate farce,
and will you not see that' they
are dispatched with maximum
speed and pending that desirable
event that they are maintained
in prison cells and not' in
hotels?"
"As I anticipated some time
ago," Churchill replied, "A good
many cases seem to have been
settled by local adjustment" a
reference to the suicides of rank
ing Nazis..

HELD BYBRHISH
With British Second , Army,
Germany', May 29 (U.R) The
British second army held Wil
liam (Lord Haw Haw) Joyce,
nasty-tongued British- nazi who
ranted at his homeland over the
German radio in custody and
sought means to try him as a
war criminal.
Joyce was captured in north
ern Germany by British second
army officers combing the area
for war criminals. He was placed
under close security .guard for
additional questioning. ' ' . '
Whether either Britain or an
international war crimes court
will have jurisdiction over. him
was questionable. He became a
naturalized German some time
ago .and as such, presumably
could not be tried as a traitor.
