    Pre-registratlon for the Red
Cross learn to swim campaign, to
be conducted at Twin Plunges,
Ashland, June 18 to June 30 is
being taken through the public
schools this week in Medford
and Ashland. "This is one of the
best opportunities ever offered
to the children of Jackson coun
ty." stated E. H. Hedrick, Med
ford school superintendent, "and
parents should let nothing stand
in the way of their children tak
ing advantage of learning to
swim under expert instruction."
Final arrangements for the
campaign were made this week
by Robert Dodge, water safety
chairman, and Sidney Llambias,
Red Cross field representative
from San Francisco, who spent
two days conferring with Red
Cross and school officials, set
ting up details.
At Superintendent Hedrick's
request, Llambias talked to boys
ol the senior and junior classes
of Medford high school on func
tional or combat swimming,
which Llambias has taught in
army and navy military installa
tions since Pearl Harbor. If suf
ficient number of young men
register from the high schools of
the county, requesting combat
swimming, Dodge states the
committee will plan to add this
training course to the already
extensive program set up. De
tails on time and pool arrange
ments will be announced later.
Free Transportation
The already ' enthusiastic re
sponse to the first swimming
campaign to be conducted by the
local chapter since 1942 may
make it necessary to have two
Instructors, according to Dodge.
In one school alone 100 children
have signified intention of regis
tering.
