DERANGEMENT
In most cases of derangement

lining of the
knee joint and
cons e q u e n t
thickening of

synovial Oining) membrane.
Although young persons who
are athletic often develop this
disability they are little if any
more subject to Internal de
rangement of the knee than are
young persons who never in
dulge in even the mildest play.
The primary injury, wrench
or mishap responsible for the
derangement may be as simple
as turning over in bed or nudg'
ing or kicking something with
the side of the foot. This tears a
cartilage partly from its attach
ment so that the loosened por
tion is left unanchored and
therefore likely to slip out of
place and get pinched. Once this
derangement has developed the
virtim is likelly to have repeat
ed painful experiences from sua
den pinching .of the loose body
in a careless movement of the
knee, with perhaps locking of
the Joint which may require
general anesthesia for unlocking
end a week or so of swelling
and lameness after each such In
cident. What to do?
That depends on the value of
the knee. If it is not essential
that full use of the knee be re
covered or retained, one can
drift along, half crippled, fooling
with liniments, diets, manipula
tion, nostrums, trick healers
there are so many dlvertisements
of that sort available nowadays.
On the other hand, if one can't
afford to be so handicapped
there are two alternatives, name
ly, keeping the knee always sup
ported with an elastic bandage
and elastic splints, or submitting
to surgical removal or anchoring
of the loose body. This operation
is by no means so formidable as

Mrs. A. L. Beach, Route 2, Box
181, yesterday brought a clipping
from a recent issue of the Mail
Tribune to the office regarding
discovery of the body of Francis
Schlatter, who had been dead 20
years, in the basement of St.
Louis undertaking parlor.
Mrs. Beach said she was ac
quainted with Schlatter In Pueb
lo, Colo., 40 years ago when he
was practicing faith healing
there. She also brought to the
Mail Tribune office a picture she
said was of Schlatter and a hand
kerchief he blessed for her sick
child.
Mrs. Beach said she had not
heard of Schlatter Bince leaving
Pueblo.
15,000 Combat GIs
Heading Home Soon
Paris, May 18 (U.RT More
than 15,000 soldiers with critical
scores above 85 points will be re
leased from the European thea
ter and headed for home by June
1, . headquarters announced last
night.
The group will be made up al
most entirely of combat soldiers
with officers constituting less
than two per cent. It will in
clude about 12,000 from the 12th
army group, 3,000 from the 6th
army group and 500 from the air
forces.
