Mother Here Mrs. Christine
Thomas of San Francisco is visit
ing her son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Cordy, at
the family home on Beall Lane.
Mrs. Thomas plans to return to
her home at the end of the
month.

Officer Here Capt. D. L.
Widmeyer arrived Saturday on
leave from McCaw general hos
pital, Walla Walla, Wash., -to
visit his wife and children at the
family home, 108 Florence
street. The officer will return
next week.
Announce Sale Rebekah

They will leave May 14. Mrs.
Wharton is the former Virginia
Manus of Medford.

.. Walker Home Kenneth Walk
er, warrant boatswain, arrived
home Saturday from the naval
supply depot, Oakland, Calif.,
where he is stationed with the
merchant marine. Walker is
visiting his wife and two weeks
old baby, Lonne Fay, at their
home at Riverside apartments.
Leaves For South Mrs. Geo.
Bovyer, 115 North Oakdale ave.,
left last night for Oakland, Calif,
to make her home with her par
ents. Her husband, Pfc. George
Bovyer, has been transferred
from the Medford air' base to
Boise, Idaho. Mrs. Bovyer was
employed at the local rationing
board.
Announce Meeting Phoenix
Garden club members will make
graduation corsages at the regu
lar meeting scheduled for Fri
day, May 11, at the home of Mrs.
L. O. Tenland, Fern Valley. Mrs.
L. G. Gentner of Medford will
supervise the corsages and those
attending are to bring Dutch
iris and double lavender lilacs.
Members are also asked to bring
plants for exchange. Officers
urge a large attendance for the
meeting, set for 1:30 p.m.
Initialed Two Medford stu
dents at the University of Ore
gon, Miss Joyce Utz and Miss
Helen Webb, were Initiated into
Sigma Delta Pi, national Spanish
honorary, in a Joint ceremony
with the university chapter and
Oregon State college chapter
held Sunday. Members are cho
sen on the basis of scholarship
and interest in Spanish. Miss Utz
is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn H. Utz, 301 Crater Lake
avenue, and Miss Webb is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
Webb, 819 Minnesota avenue.

Promoted Harold L. Sleight,
serving at a 7th AAF heavy
bomber base in the Marianas as
a B-24 Liberator co-pilot, has
been promoted to first lieuten
ant. Lt. Sleight, whose parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sleight, re
side at 117 Tripp street, attended
Medford senior high school and
Oregon State college. He entered
the army in March of 1943.

Stocks made an irregular decline
today on contracted volume.
Special issues attracted a sub
stantial following but the main
list was neglected and a suffi
cient number of rails and indus
trials receded to bring declines
in those averages. Small gains
predominated in the main group
of utilities.
Market operators moved cau
tiously because of the uncertain
ties over partial reconversion of
industry. Big corporations said
they had no idea what the gov
ernment had in mind regarding
the cnangeover and they were
maintaining a crossed-fingers at
titude. As a result the trading
element in stocks tended to sell

said today. The budget, now in
process of preparation by the
county clerk, was prepared in
two sessions by the appointed
committee composed of Ben
Harder, Medford; Arnold Bohn

Robison, Ashland, acting with
the county court.
Commissioner Arthur E. Pow
ell of Central Point, said he
thought the budget, when reca
pitulated would be about the
same as last year. Salary in
creases provided for elective of
ficers, by the last legislature, are
provided for in the budget as
well as a veterans' security offi
cer. The estimates for the various
county offices and departments
are approximately the same as
last year.
