    SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE
Your Health and It's Care
By OR. WILLIAM BRADV M.D.
Readers ibould address inquiries loi Dr Wiiilam Brady.

BEWARE THE QUACK
There Is a great deal of mis
understanding and confusion con.
cernlng the significance of en.
larged tonsils
Jn children and
infected tonsils
and so called
focal infection
in adolescents
and adults.
Much of this
m i s u n d e r
standing and
e o n f u sion is
shared by phy-
el(ana Vnr In.
wnwniiiW 'Z stance, I quote
Dr. Brady from a metro
politan health commissioner's of
ficial advice to the public:
"Enlarged tonsils were found
In 4,440 of 11,851 school children
examined. This does not mean
that 4,440 operations for the re
moval of tonsils were required,
but it does mean that many of
these children require operation,
while every child having them
was more or less handicapped by
this focus of infection pouring
poison into his system at an age
when all the reserve of his en
ergy Is required for growth and
the acquirement of knowledge."
That piece of aslnlnlty was ac
tually offered to the public in
the community where the emi
nent health commissioner is an
authority and no medical prac
titioner in that community so
much as raised an eyebrow about
It. It goes to show, I believe, Just
how sadly at sea, uninformed
and confused the putative "au
thorities" are about it.
Most healthy children have
"enlarged" tonsils, especially in
the late winter and early spring,
and there is no good reason to
regard this as unfavorable to the
child's health unless the tonsils
andor adenoids are so enlarged
that they obstruct breathing
(through the nose) or Impair the
ViMirlnff. Only when mouth
breathing or noticeable deafness
(determined by careful tests by
the physician) warrant It, is re
moval of tonsils andor adenoids
necessary, in my opinion.
From the characteristic teach
ing of the metropolitan health
'commissioner, quoted above, it is
. obvious that the doctor shares a
half-baked notion which too
many doctors have that en
larged tonsils are infected. This
notion. I say, is asinine.
That many putatlvely compe
tent physicians, not only general
practitioners but brass nose and
throat specialists entertain the
absurd notion that lymphoid tis
sue (In tonsils or adenoid body)
Is pathological or abnormal ana
ought to be removed is evident
In the attiture tney wko '
gard to the diathermy (electro
coagulation) method of treating
enlarged or lniectea ionei.
