This officer knows what he Is
talking about. He quotes from
a directive of the War Depart
ment, the policy of the Surgeon
General of the U. S. Army:
"The basic ration (or menu)
has been analyzed and pro
nounced nutritionally adequate
by both army medical authori
ties and outstanding nutrition
ists There should be no ques
tion as to the adequacy of the
soldiers' dietary
Up to this point the outlook
Is not all bright it begins to
look as though I'll have to eat
my words again
"provided the ration is used
as issued and provided use is
made of the prescribed quanti
ties of canned fruits and vege
tables, evaporated milk or dried
milk, enriched flour and lemon
powder; and provided the food
Is prepared and served in ac
cordance with good practices.".,
What I meant to imply, Cap
tain, is that it is practically im
possible to get enough minerals
and vitamins to maintain op
timal nutrition, functional effi
ciency, the best possible state of
health, vite, from food alone,
and hence I maintain that it is
advisable for every one infant,
child, adult, mature or elderly
person to supplement the daily

The rations issued to our sol
dlers are probably the best army
rations in the world.- Where it
is possible to fulfill all the con
ditions the Surgeon General
directive specifies, the soldier
no doubt gets a "well balanced
or better, a nutritionally ade
quate diet. But slipping the es
sential minerals and vitamins in
to the soldier via doctored ("en
riched") flour Instead of feeding
them to him in a pill, capsules
or a chew or swallow of some
such concentrate is tantamount
to admitting your diet or menu
is in itself inadequate to main
tain good nutrition, isn't it, Cap
tain?
Won't some nutrition author
ity please write a menu which
provides all the vitamins and
minerals an ordinary person re
quires for good nutrition? It
must be made up of natural
foods, of course, and no "en
riched" or doctored interpola
tions.
