Sen. "Happy" Chandler
Named Czar Of Baseball
Br John X Cutte
United Press Correspondent
WashhiBton. April 25. U.R)
Ron. Albert B. "Happy" Chand-
ler, D., Ky., hoped today that as
baseball's high commissioner he
can be as good tor the sport as
M haa been to him.
'To me baseball It the great
est sport in the world," Chandler
anld. "It has brought me prob
ably the highest honor of my
life. I hone that I oan do eome-
thlnn- for the Kame."
Chandler returned to the
senate today to begin winding
up his political affairs with ex
pectation that he can do It In 30
to 60 days. When that Is done
baseball, an avocation until now,
will get his undivided attention.
"The important thing at the
moment Is to keep the game on
its present high plane," Chand-

ler said. "It's an honest "game
and has to be kept that way."
"After the war there Is anoth
er matter. The young kids com
ing along have got to have I
chance to get Into the game,
Baseball is going to have an im
portant place in the postwar
sports program. 7
Chandler left no doubt that he
expects to have full authority
as commissioner comparable to
that of the late Judge Kenesaw
M. Landls.
"It never ocourred to me that
it would be anything less," he
said. "I can't go in there stand
ing in the shadow of Judge Lan
dis and not have authority to do
a good job as I see it.
There also was the matter of
getting $90,000 a year as base
ball commissioner instead of
$10,000 a year as senator. Chand
ler was practical about it.
"I've been in politics all my
life,'" he said. "It's a great game
but you can't make any money
at it. I've got a wife and four
children and I've got to think
about them and their future
too."

In the only other scheduled
game, the San Diego Padres

Don Pulford raoked up his
fifth straight pitching win for
Portland against Oakland, which
dropped to fifth place, five
games from the top. Pulford was
in rare form, limiting the Acorns

THE OLD JUDGE SAYS..?,
" Judge, remember that place up (n the moun
tains where we went trout fishing last year?"
''J sure do, George. We bad a great time
up there, didn't we?"
''I'll never forget It But this win Interest
you. Judge. I heard just yesterday that the
revenue men raided a big still right near
there. Guess that's where all that high
priced moonshine we heard about has been
coming from."
" Wouldn't be a bit surprised. I saw In the
paper the other day where the Government
has raided thousands of such stills during
the past year,'
''Sounds tort of reminiscent, doesn't R,
Judge?"
"Exactly and It's not hard to figure out
As soon as the distillers stopped making
whiskey and devoted their entire facilities to
the production of Industrial alcohol for the
Government... the racketeers muscled in
again."
"I hate to think of how that might have
spread, Judge, if the Government hadn't
found It possible, without Interfering with
our war effort in any way, to permit a
short resumption of legal whiskey produc
tion recently,"

STUDY OF BOXING
Sacramento, April 25 (U.R)
Gov. Earl Warren today .had
thrown his Influence against
gambling Interests which al
legedly were responsible for a
number of "fixed" boxing

emergency fund for an investi
gation of the situation since the
commission itself has no funds
for such purposes.
The governor asserted that un
dercover work in co-operation
with police authorities of cities
where bouts were held would
orevent "99 per cent" of doubt
ful fights and also to rumors of
fixed matches.

on the commission, contended
that boxing in California was
more honest than in any other
state. He said that only four al-
leeedlv f xed fights have oc
curred In the state In the past
three years.
