Oregon Should Meet California
In Improvement Of Highway 99
Argues Editor Of Siskiyou News
Editor's note: The accent on
northern California road lnv
provement will be on Highway
99, with plans for making It u
fur better road than Highway
97, which leaves California near
Dorrij, and continuing into Ore
gon via Klamath Falls, accord'
ing to William G. Bailey, man
aging editor of the Siskiyou
Daily News, of Vreka, Calif. In
view of the California plans lor
Highway 99, Editor Bailey points
out that Oregon would be 111
advised to designate a road
through Klamath Falls as its
primary route instead of tieing
its Highway 99 in with Califor
nia construction toward Ashland
and Medford. His argument fol
lows in full).
Economic forces of fat
reaching effect wilt be In play
Wednesday at the meeting of
the Pacific Highway Associa;
tloa in Medford.
While ostensibly the meeting
will consider only the problems
of presenting the merits of High
way 99 against those of High
way 97 In Oregon state road
building, the implications are
much deeper.
Yreka and western Siskiyou
county have a vital stake in the
question and will be represented
at the Medford meeting.
This first skirmish between
conflicting aspirations of towns
along the two routes between
Weed and Eugene is centered in
the Oregon State Highway Com
mission. The commission must
designate as that state's main
inter-regional highway through
southern Oregon either the road
from Eugene down through Med
ford and Ashland (99) or the
cutoff route from Eugene
through Klamath Falls and into
California near Dorris (97).
That both of theie routes
require "good" highways to
serve the economic Interests of
their territories Is not argued.
That is obvious.
Kernel of the nut in the pres
ent instance is that whichever
route the Oregon commission de
signates as its "main" inter-regional
road will have a continu
ing edge over the other in future
Oregon road building appropria
tions. This In turn may have a bear
ing on the postwar Federal super-highway
routing now plan
ned roughly along the lines of
Highway 99. The Federal road,
in turn, Is expected to mean a
great deal to communities con
tiguous to Us right-of-way.
Thus the far reaching eco
nomic aspects of this Medford
conference Wednesday which
will have as Its chief bugaboo
the fact that the Klamath Falls
boys are sitting pretty with one
of their number seated as a mem
ber of the present Oregon high
way commission.
.
Siskiyou county will be
able to present some elements
of fact In Medford that should
have weight in swinging the
Oregon decision toward the
Eugene Medford Ashland
Yreka route.
Highway 99 from Weed to
the Oregon line via Yreka and
Hilt has been more or less neg
lected for several years now be
cause the last big State expendi
tures in this county were made
on Route 97 from Weed via Dor
ris into Oregon near Klamath
Falls. The latter road now is
considered generally as devel
oped sufficiently to serve needs
of that area for several years to
come.
Accent on California plans
now Is on 99, with blueprints and
plans completed for making it a
far better road than is 97, the
more recently completed stretch.
As pointed out in this column
recently, rights-of-way already
have been acquired from the bor
der checking station at Hilt to
the Klamath river at Lowe's
Camp. It provides for practically
a four-lane, straight, high speed
route.
Similar right-of-way has been
acquired from Weed southward
to Mount Shasta, through this
stretch will serve both 99 and
97, which fork at the north edge
of Weed.
In the wind at Sacramento
ere further plans for similar
improvement of 99 on the
stretch from north of Yreka
Into the long straightaway
north of Gazelle.
What this means is that the
central highway in Siskiyop
county from Weed via Yreka,
Hornbrook and Hilt, is slated for
No. 1 designation and priority
construction as a super-highway
route. The land has been ac
quired, blueprints drawn, and
construction awaits only release
of men and materials.
It would seem silly for the
State of Oregon to designate a
road through Klamath Falls as
its primary route instead of tie
ing it in with California con
struction toward Ashland and
Medford.
State teamwork Is required
for both Oregon end California
to realise the greatest benefits
from money spent on highway
construction.
