Barnyard Golf Fan
To the Editor It takes sunny
days and balmy weather to in
veigle golfers out to indulge in
their favorite pastime. This ap
plies to both kinds, the country
club enthusiast who delights to
swat the little white pill far (or
again not so far) down the fair
way, and the barnyard boys in
their popular game trying to
hang double shoes around the
pin.
I am Informed that both these
varieties of golf are popular in
Medford, and know for a fact
that converts to the "barnyard"
type are preparing for a busy
summer, as groups of -them are
now practicing daily on their
splendid new courts In the city
park.
In the writer's opinion horse
shoe pitching Is a game requiring
greater skill than the more pop
ular one Involving the little
white pill and a bag of tricks
(pardon, I mean sticks), for I
have played both for a number
of years.
Horse shoe pitching is splen
did exercise, all doctors agree;
It's a game for old and young
alike and Is very inexpensive
It is being played by thousands
In everv state In the union.
The city council of Medford
la to be congratulated for grant
ing the Medford Horse Shoe
club the location on which their
attractive courts are built and
where pedestrians may step in
and watch some ot me exciung
games.

A spokesman for the Federation

ably will be called Tuesday.
The National Labor Relations
Board will conduct a strike vote
among the memc-ers today un
der the provisions of the Smith

Chicago (U.R) Easier removal
of the hood, grill and front fen
ders as a single unit and mount
ing of the engine so that it can
be readily moved forward in the
chassis are recommendations for
the postwar car by auto service
men. These suggestions were
made In a contest conducted over
a three-month period by Motor
Service, a magazine published
mainly for the men who repair
your car.
Service mechanics suggest re
arranging the automobile Instru
ment panel so that repairs can
be readily made from the driv
er's seat and the mechanic will
not have to stand on his head in
order to see what's wrong be
hind the panel. Easier accessi
bility to nuts, bolts and other
gadgets Is urged so that the re
pairman no longer has to do a
$15 dismantling and re-assembly
Job in order to install a new part
costing 50 cents.
Gas Tank Whistle
Auto repairmen also ask that
a whistling device be Installed
In the neck oi the gas tank so
a warning will sound when the
tank Is full, eliminating over
running and waste; a drain valve
in the bottom of the gas tank to
simplify cleaning; -more accessi
ble gas tank for removal; heav
ier rear crossframe to Dermit a
trailer hitch; better drain facili-1
ties for radibtors and less nuts
and bolts on the radiator grill;
automatic choke and clutch:
throttle governor to hold the car !
at any pre-selected speed; better '
placing of shock-absorbers. I
Clear plastic tops was also
urged by some contestants, but
others objected to transparent1
tops as eliminating shade and
consequent coolness in hot!
weather. Wider use of plastics in
car bodies was generally recom mended,
particularly to elim '
inte "blind spots" caused by,
front windshield pillars. Some!
of the plastic advocates even !
suggested- a "c mpletely rounded 1
plastic windshield similar to!
those used on some types of air
craft.
Use of double-thick glass with
an insulating air layer between
the sheets of glass was put forth !
as a means of preventing frost '
ing and fogging of windshields
Changeable Seat Covers
Unique as a means of keenins
the like-new interior appear j
ance of a car was the sugges i
tion that changeable covers be!
provided for all upholstered sur-1
faces. These would be installed1
with zippers so that the covers
could be taken off and cleaned
or exchanged for ones of differ
ent color at the whim of the
owner.
For convenience, It was pro
posed that but one key be pro-
ided to operate all locks on the
car all doors locking or open
ing from one central position
Changes on the instrument panel
include mounting fuses so they
would be within reach of the
driver and warning lights ,to
flash when the oil level is low
and to Indicate low hydraulic
brake fluid. Better sound-deadening
was also recommended as
well as deeper and more com
fortable seats which could be
converted into a full-length bed.
Hay Fever Victims
Are Told To Make
Best Of .Situation
Boston (U.R) "Make the best
of it," is the only advice Massa,
chusetts Public Health Commis
sioner Vlado A. Getting can give
hay fever sufferers.
According to evidence pre
sented a state legislative com
mlttee, rag-weed pollen, which
affects sufferers, has been found
In the stratosphere and 100 miles
at sea.
Dr. Getting said that experi
ments showed that even if Mas
sachusetts were to destroy every
bit of ragweed within its boun
daries, the pollen still would be
carried in by the wind from ad
jacent states.
12.000 CANS IN WEEK
Chicago (U.R) One week's
supply , of tin cans from 185
penny lunchrooms operated by
the Chicago board of education
provided enough material for
two B-29 bombers. John Howatt,
board business manager, said the
12,000 gallon cans were turned
over to the war production
board.
