Statei history the 9th army,
The correspendent iayi: "I saw
Gen. Bradley today with his
chief of staff, MaJ. Gen. Leven
C. Allen, and both presented the
appearance of an unruffled and
happy pair. Bradley, his hands In
his pockets, leaned against a
wall as he discussed one phase
of the current operations with
Allen as though four armies pre
sented no more problems than
one. But earlier I had had a long
conversation with both and I
know that the fighting today Is
presenting more problems in ap
plied mathematics and logistics
than practically anything hither
to.
Two-Man Job
'It Is Gen. Bradley who gives
the troops their targets. It Is this
headquarters where strategy and
tactics merge. This Is a strategic
and tactical Job the strategy
coming from Gen. Eisenhower,
with Bradley and Allen turn
ing It into applied tactics.
"Admiring Gen. Allen's facil
ity as chief of staff. Field Mar
shal Bernard Montgomery asked
King George to make him a
companion of the Order of the

of the order splashes added color
on Gen. Allen's chest.
Work Together
"Gens. Bradley and Allen are
like two fingers together, with
Bradley the index, and Gen.
Allen is his deputy when the
commander goes forward, and is
his adviser on personnel, log
istics, enemy information, sup
ply, planning and civil affairs
when both are together. All n
coming Information from the
four armies and all outgoing in
structions from Gen. Bradley are
channeled through Gen. Allen.
"Gen. Allen has been responsi
ble, wholly or In part, for the
indoctrination of 83 per cent of
all American army officers. He
succeeded Bradley as command
ant of the Tort Bennlnf, Ga.,
infantry school In February,
1042, when Bradley went to Tu
nisia. Gen. Allen turned out of

greatest American field force In
history fortified by his experi

the general staff in Washington
he can feel confident with
Gen. Bradley that this colossal
operational command will
work."

CHURCHILL HINTS
London, April 13 (U.R)
Prime Minister Churchill hinted
In Commons today that the Al
lies forsee a necessity of forcing
Isolated German army segments
and areas into unconditional sur
render over some period of time.
Churchill said In a brief an
swer to a question In Commons:
"The policy of unconditional
surrender does not exclude un
conditional surrender piecemeal,
and is not necessarily applied
only to wholesale surrender."
Laborite Rhys Davis ques
tioned Churchill regarding Gen.
Pwight D. Eisenhower's letter
to President Roosevelt saying
there probably never would be a
clean cut German military capit

tha statement, Churchill an

Sir" to a question whether he
