Your Health anid It's Care
By OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D.

WHAT NOT TO DO
One day I said no one knows
what "chronic rheumatism
means, that is, the term Is ap
plied lo in;
ailment or di
sease or Injury
that causes
lameness, pain
or 1 m p a 1 r ed
function of
limbs or Joints.
I said that any
one who pre
tends to know
of such a di
f
sease as "rheu
matism" and of
r. a remedy or
cure for It deceives himself or
more likely his customer.
Having thus stipulated that
there Is no such aumeni or oi
sease as "rheumatism," I turn
right around, as you might say
If you are naive about It, and
invite everybody who wants it
to send stamped self-addressed
envelope and ask for the pam
phlet Calcium and Rheumatli.
But that Is not so Inconsistent
as It may appear at first glance
You will find that the pamphlet
begins with this avowal: "Cer
tainly I do not believe or Imply
that calcium will cure any 111
called rheumatism." But in the
pamphlet I tell Just what amount
of cacium, phosphorus, and Vita
min D I would take dally to sup
plement my diet If I had any
such trouble as you, old mutton
head, would call rheumatiz. It
may do no good but I believe it
can do no harm. That's all.
From past experience in try
big to educate muttonheads who
in their ovine way know their
trouble is genuine rheumatism in
spite of anything I may tell them
after all, how could I under
stand about It if I have never
had rheumatism myself? I
feel Inclined to duck when I
bring up the relation of climate,
go many of the muttonheads
ascribe their condition to the
cold, damp, changeable climate.
But maybe a quotation from Dr.
Bernard R. Comroe will serve the
purpose and leave me in compar
ative safety here on the home
front. Discussing the diagnosis
and treatment of arthritis and
allied conditions (J. A. M. A.
Feb. 17, "45) Dr. Comroe said:
"Another common mistake In
the handling of patients with
rheumatoid arthritis Is to advise
the patient to give up his Job, sell
his belongings and move to the
Southwestern part of the United
States In the hope that he will be
miraculously and suddenly cured
of his arthritis. Unfortunate'v.
such does not occur. In most cas
es change In climate alone will
usually not result in improve
ment. Holbrook has found that
chronic arthritis may continue
as a sad and crippling disease
even on the Arizona desert.
Hench has advised that most pa
tienta with rheumatoid arthritis
should battle their arthritis prob
lems at home and should not be
encouraged to endanger their
economic status or disrupt their
social tics in a vain attempt to
find a climate that cures."
I hope readers will not be
more confused by the term
"rheumatoid arthritis" than I
am. As nearly as I can learn,
"rheumatod" means resembling
