churches have planned the tra
ditional Easter services and spe
cial Holy Week services have
been held throughout the week
City schools have been closed
since Tuesday afternoon,
Plans were announced this
week for a new residential addi
tion to Medford in the vicinity
of Hillcrest Road and Valley
View' Drive to be known as
Dean Park, after the owner and
promoter, Dr. George B. Dean.
Some 30 ultra-modern homes
will be erected whenever ma
terials are available. Business
men point to steady increases in
phone,, electric and water con'

collected 35,000 pounds of scrap
tin and the Ashland schools 10,
000 pounds, in the recent drive.
Easter vacation was lengthened

Sgt. Lome B. Cox, one of the
men released from Cabantuan

for a brief visit before being
i sent to Barnes hospital in Van

March 8 and was first hospital
ized in Letterman hospital at
San Francisco.
Pfc. Kenneth Willard Am
brose has returned to this coun
try after service in Europe and
while hospitalized at Ft. Lewis
found that the man two beds
away, also just back from Eur
ope, was a cousin whom he had
never seen.
A purple heart was recently
awarded to Pfc. Leonard S.
Lyons, paratrooper and gunner,
for wounds received in Belgium.
He is hospitalized in England
and his brother, Cpl. John Ly
ons, stationed In England, has
been in s'or several visits. Pfc.
Fred W. Lyon is also hospital
ized in England for wounds re
ceived in the European theater
and has been awarded the pur
ple heart. Ardo Stocks, techni
cian fifth grade, recently suf
fered wounds to his right eye,
arm and hand while serving
near Cologne.
Others on the wounded list
are ' Pfc. Austin E. Caldwell,
Sgt. Eloy Cordova, Pfc. Robert
D. Hibbs, Cpl. Vaughn L.
Groves, Pfc. Arleigh Kenyon
and Cpl Robert Gale. All but
Groves and Kenyon were serv
ing in the European theater
Reported killed in action are
Pfc. James Leabo on Luzon and
Cpl. Robert Bischoff in Luxem
bourg. Staff Sgt. Dean Clark,
B-29 gunner, and Sgt. Archie
Harris of the 9th air force are
reported missing. This week an
air medal was awarded to Sec
ond Lt. Donald L. Peart, now a
prisoner of the Germans, the
medal being presented to his
mother.
Marshall K. Williams, with
the 7th army, has been promot
ed to fifth grade technician;
James Grigeby, Jr., to electrl-
cian third class while serving
on a naval transport; John Bar
ber is now a staff sergeant with
the 5th army; Jack Balding,
with a QM depot in England,
has been made a captain and
John Salsberry, radarman on
a Pathfinder plane, has been
made a first lieutenant.
Lt. Raymond Proctor, recent
ly promoted to first lieutenant
with the 13th AAF. has been
transferred from a South Pa
cific base to one in the Far East.
Lt. Proctor holds the purple
heart.
Home after service overseas
are Fred H. Wilcox, Emlc; Sec
ond Lt. Royal 07 Cooley, who
made 35 flights over Germany;
Lt. H. D. Byington of the navy;
Lawrence G. Youmans, RdMlc
and Col. Ben Harrell, who has

Crashing new frontiers of high

serving in France. Connie
Latham, CSK, has been assigned
to overseas duty for tne second
time. Jean Woolridgo has gone
to Washington, D. C, and from
there will be assigned to over
seas duty with the state depart
ment, and Pvt. John Zimmcrlee
has arrived in the Philippine
Islands for duty.
Cpl. and Mrs. H. W. Smets
(Roberta Hamlin) are the par
ents of a daughter born March
22.
Latest weddings are those of
Marie Metzenberg, Portland, to
Meredith D. Shuler, petty officer
second class in the navy; Mrs.
Eva Nichols to Jack Fortin,
chief petty officer.

PROMINENT HOP GROWER
DIES AT GRANTS PASS
Grants Pass, Mar. 30 Arthur
Augustus King, 50, prominent
hop grower, died at Josephine
General hospital Thursday. He
had been confined at the hospital
since Thursday when he suf
fered a stroke. King had been a
hop grower for the past 18 years.
His yards were located between
the upper and lower River roads
He was a member of Elks
lodge, Eagles lodge, the Izaak
Walton league and was a lead
ing sportsman of the commun
Ity. He is survived by his wife
and four children.
