Deceased.
A friend of mine lately re
ceived a letter I practically
begged to be allowed to use In
this column. It was written to
her by a Norwegian captain of a
boat which, so I concluded, has
been leased to the British.
"My son, Ivar, finished his
commercial training in July. Of
course, education of any kind
has been interrupted when not
broken off entirely many
many times. Especially so during
'40 and '41. In my home town,
Haugesund, the Germans took
over all the schools but one. In
that one, left for the Norweg
lans, the students had to take
turns, Some went to school in
early mornings, some in the mid
dle of the day and some In late
afternoon.
'These three groups Included
young children from 6 to 14;
then the middle school, or those
from 14 to 18. And then what
we call the gymnasiaster, being
those that have finished high
school, Even the mates, masters
and engineers had their schools
taken, but they fixed rooms in
the basement ordinarily used for
coal and firwood storage,
"Ivar went to Bergen to our
newest and largest university for
commercial training. Now he is
training to be what we call an
"average adjuster." Many times
he has been "ready" to be sent
to Germany, but many have had
to be left behind for lack of
shipping space and always Ivar
has been among those left.
"At one time the Germans
took 1.500 students from Oslo
alone Sent them all to concen
tratlon camps in Germany. In
Norway now, any young man or
girl thought to be at all idle is
taken and put at some jod or
other If they do not do as ioia
they are sent to Germany as
slave laborers. Many girls are
taken to German brothels. es

Patton Defends M-4 Tanks
In Action .Against Germany
Washington, March 88-4U.R)
Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.,
commander ot tha 3rd army,
whose armor has Just scored an
other sensational break-through,
was on record today vigorously
defending the U. S. M-4 tanka.
These have been criticized as
being too light.
Patton said the 3rd army tanks
had rolled up a score of approxi
mately two to one over German
tanks. A substantial part of the
enemy tanks were the heavy
Tigers or Panthers. Many of the
German tanks were dug in de
fensively, while American tanks
were attacking.
Patton'i views were given In
a letter dated March 19, address
ed to Lt. Gen. Thomas T. Handy,
deputy chief of staff.
"It has come to my knowledge
that certain misguided or per
haps deliberately mendacious In
dividuals, returning from the
captain of this ship, yet I get
less than a messboy receives on
an American ship. I know you
can scarce believe this, but it is
a fact. Our government In Lon
don has 'traded' us very cheaply
to the British. When all we have
saved has been destroyed by the
Germans, we will have to start
from the very beginning. I badly
need a leave, but when I re
member my sons In school In
Norway, I know I cannot afford
it. Our life at sea isn't easy. We
haven't good men any more,
which makes It even harder for
one In my position."
I thought you would enjoy as
much as I did, this glimpse 'be
hind the scenes; something not
for the record.
