Pride Is a very Important factor in human behavior. That is
one reason Jane Austin wrote a book called "Pride and Pre
judice;" or did one of the Bronte sisters? (We admit that hike
over the mountain, part of it in a drizzle has left the editor with
a pair of weak knees and rather muddled in the head.) And that
is where the "pride" comes in.
When we were at La Serena in 1042 we walked over this
Skyline trail, and ten minutes faster than the old boy also at
La Serena who manufactures "Spam." From the golf course
there is as nice a wormseya view
is a bird s-eye view down from the top. bo we remarked casually
one day to our golfing "pals" that when last in Palm Springs
we had walked up to the flag there on the peak and back it
doesn't look higher than a thousand feet from the golf course.
One of them we can't recall which said with a leer and u
sneer:
"You and what other Jackass?"
Holding our temper with customary dignity, we replied that
we had done so and not on the back of a burro but on our own
pedal extremities, negotiating the entire distance from the golf
club entrance over the hump to the tennis club exit, in one hour
and 28 minutes.
Well the long and the short of it was, neither of our golfing
pals or even our partner looking up at that craggy eminence
believed a word of It the latter, judging our physical prowess
by the sort of golf displayed,' could be excused, but there was
no excuse for the former, both being familiar with the editorial

Before It started to rain It was nice on the mountain top. On
one side the desert stretches out mile after mile of nothing, but
the main line of the S. P. in a sea of sand and sage brush. All
that vast area needs is water and as it has the same asset as
Palm Springs climate it will be a thickly populated winter
resort one of these days. (Before the local C of C files a protest
we will admit the winds out on the unprotected desert will be
a handicap, the great advantage of P. S. is it is in a cup protected
by mountains.)
However, if one of our grandsons would buy ten acres out
there now we venture to say he would be a millionaire at 40
but "he" won't, he (either one) is an extremely wise and con
servative young man, so probably Grand-Pappy will have to buy
it for himl
Well anyway up there a thousand feet, the desert is on one
side and Palm Springs, the U. S. Ferry airbase, and the Torrey
Hospital on the other, the two latter in area being close to ail
the former. On the end of Inspiration Point one could, if he had
a spring board and fairly good nerve, make a high dive and
never land until he hit the third tee on the Palm Springs golf
course.
One unique experience was to see a squadron of 18 bombers
start out, and see them below another bird's-eye instead of a
worm's eye view. Somehow the Impression one gets from look
ing down on a bomber is entirely different from looking up from
terra firma. The air seems for some reason from above a stable
medium of locomotion at least as stable as a boat on the surface
of a lake. Don't ask us to explain it, we couldn't. We merely
state it as a fact.
The S. P. ran three trains toward L. A. while we were up
there two freights and one passenger. None of them was ex
ceeding the S. P. speed limit. They looked like toy trains, and
judging by the time it took after the puff of steam before the
sound of the whistle could be detected, they must have been 10
or .15 miles away at least. And then we were not quite sure, the
sound was so faint. 1
