Palestine Sought

A delegation which said it repre
sented 8.000 Protestant clergy
men today delivered to. the
White House an appeal that
Palestine be opened to the jews
as "a place of refuge and com
fort." The appeal was presented to
Jonathan Daniels, acting press
secretary to the president. Sim
ilar petitions were delivered
later in the day to the British
and soviet embassies for for
warding to Prime Minister Win
ston Churchill and Marshal Josef
Stalin.

Canol Project To
Be Closed April 1
Washington, March 15 (U.
The army's Canol project In
Canada will be closed April 1,
Sen. James M. Mead (D., N. Y.),
told the senate today.
The army began construction
of the aviation gasoline project
three years ago. Mead's war in
vestigating committee found that
it has cost this government
$134.000,00Q thus far.
Mead said 2,000 workers now
employed at Canol will be
"transferred to petroleum fields
in this country as soon as possible."

A donation of $25 was voted for
the Red Cross.
There will be an all day meet
ing of H.E.C. on March 28 at
the home of Bertha Keim for, the
purpose of tacking a quilt. Lad
ies attending are asked to bring
a covered dish for luncheon,
also table service.

tative for the. Red Cross for this
district. " Mrs. Tingleaf assisted
him in collecting from members
at the meeting.

During a normal year 200,000 loaded refrigerator cars
pass through the giant Roseville yard and other yards
along Southern Pacific's lines. In this huge "icebox"
fresh fruits and vegetables move to markets across the
continent.
In no section of the United States are more fruits and
vegetables grown than in California, Oregon, Arizona
and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Every year this
great Western garden supplies most of the nation's
grapes, lettuce, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, more
than half of the citrus fruits and melons, much of the
celery and peas, and nearly one-third of the principal
deciduous fruits.
The West today would not be the prosperous agricul
tural region that it is without fast refrigerated freight,
the huge investment in cars and equipment and the
elaborate schedules of Western railroads which provide
. timely delivery of produce to markets where the de
mand is greatest.
Food fights for Victory. And fresh foods are vital to
the health of Americans here on the home front, to men
in Army, Navy and Marine camps, at home and abroad,
to war workers in the Eastern industrial cities, to our
returned wounded in hospitals throughout the land.

Russian Pianist Presents
Fourth Concert Of Series

The Jackson County Civic
Music association presented the
fourth concert of its 1945 series
at the high school Tuesday night.
The artist, who was most warm
ly received, was the Russian
pianist, Ania Dorfman.
The program Was vital and
diversified and there was ap
peal to individual musical taste
and preference. Miss Dorman
is endowed by nature and
equipped by training with much
that Is essential to conveying
the musical spirit to the public.
The scope of her program ex
emplified what piano mastery
can be. Our people having
heard such outstanding and effi
cient pianists and musicians on
previous concerts of the series,
as Leo Taubman, Harry Kauf
man, and Carl Fuerstner, serv
ing as accompanists and direc
tors, and many expressing the
wish that they might have been
heard in a solo piano number,
hence it was an eagerly antici
pated joy to hear an entire pro-
