First step toward develop
ment of a new park for Med
ford, which has been discussed
and planned for so long, was
taken this week when the city
council purchased 19 acres of
land, the Olds tract, on the east
bank of Bear creek between the
East Main street and Jackson
boulevard bridges. Price of the
land, $20,000 was donated by 22
city residents and firms.

the project as soon as possible
ana one of the recreational facil
ities win be the municipal swim
ming pool for which a special

Rogue River and Arlington
move their "B." struggle for a
tourney berth to Arlington to
morrow night. Arlington won
the. first game 30-28 and Rogue
river, evened the score the next
night with a 37-to-22 victory.
A recent letter from Staff Sgt.
R. H. Archer stated that ha had
left China and returned to India
and that he was "back on a wa
ter buffalo diet, with delicious
dehydrated potatoes for a chas
er." W. L. (Red) Hober, now a
chief warrant officer in the
navy, recently wrote about a
visit to New Zealand, declaring
he thought the country quite
similar to Oregon.
Capt. James Annlng, who
served 22 months overseas, in-
eluding China and India, will
now be fighter pilot Instructor
at Strother field, Kan., and Lt.
Thomas Helman, who returned
home nearly a year ago after
many missions as a Fortress pilot
out of England, has transferred
to the ATC and Is at Great Falls,
Mont. Lt. Mark Miller has been
assigned to duty at Big Springs,
Tex., at the bombardier school.
Chester Webb, B-24 engineer
gunner with the 16th AAF in
Italy, has been promoted to ser
geant and Pvt. Esley E. Surran
is serving with the signal corps
in Italy. Douglas Eden, B-17
bombardier with the 8th AAF,
has been promoted to first lieu
tenant. Bill Wall, on a supply
shiD in the Pacific, has been
made a boatswain's mate second
class.
First Lt. Ted Taylor has ar
rived , In Medford after 34
months in the southwest Pacific
and more recently In the Philip
pines and Lt. Henry Fisher, after
service In widely scattered parts
of the world has been assigned
to midshipman's school In New
York City. Others home after
service overseas are Ray Mc
Knight, Slc, who saw action In
the Philippines and wears a pur
nle heart: Chief Petty Officer

cific; and Clyde Chrlss, seaman,
home after 13 momns in xn
south Pacific.
Both Cpl. John Jensen ana
Cpl. Ernest R. Smith are now
serving In Franca.
Sgt. Dolph Guyer, wounded
recently in Philippine action,
wrote the latter part of Febru
ary to say that he was getting
along fine and his wounded arm
healing nicely. St. Carroll Wat
son received wounds while serv
ing in Holland but has now re
covered and returned to his com
pany in Germany. He has sent

Lt. Spencer Weills, marine
corps fighter pilot serving on a
carrier in the Pacific, has been
reported missing in action and
Cpl. Cecil R. Claflin, gunner on
a bomber of the 12th AAF, Italy,
is also declared to be missing.
Recent "blessed events" were
the birth of a son to Capt. and
Mrs. Frank Van Pelt (Evelyn
Leonard); son born to Lt. and
Mrs. Ray Ettinger, (Maiy Dur
and) and son born to Mr. and
Mrs. Art R. Gray, (Katherine
Weston). Capt. Van Pelt U with
the army in Germany and Lt.
Ettinger Is a navy pilot In thei
south Pacific.
Sunday the engagement of
Joan Cox to Dean W. Pruett,
ARMSe, waa announced. Dean
is now stationed at a California
base. Weddings announced were
Rosalind Cramer and Melvin
Hoover; Maurine Shearer to
Lewis E. Conger; Barbara Ann
Brayton to Richard T. Nelson
and Jane Anderson of Green
ville, S. C, to Lt. Jack Martin of
Gold Hill. The Hoovers will live
here, the groom having recently
been discharged from the army,
the Nelsons will live in Portland
while the bride finishes cadet
nurse training, and the Congers
will also live here. Nelson re
cently returned home after over
seas duty with a medical unit of
the navy and Lt. Martin also
recently returned home from
army air corps duty in the Pacific.
