Berry Spraying
Is Advised Now
Youngberries and boysenber
ries should be sprayed now for
control of leaf and cane spot and
scale. A mixture of one quart
of liquid lime sulphur or one
pound dry lime surphur to three
gallons of water should be used
The leaf and cane spot dis
ease results in the dead areas
that are commonly seen on berry
canes. These dead areas reduce
the vigor of the plants to such an
extent that fewer and smaller
berries are produced. In severe
cases the canes may die before
the crop has ripened.,
The scale appears as small
white spots on the lower parts
of canes. This is generally not
very serious, but occasionally a
heavy infestation builds up.
This same spray applied to
blackberry plants after the new
shoots are about four Inches long
will control the red berry dis
ease. Roses and grape vines that are
troubled with mildew would be
benefited by the spray, but it
should be followed by sulphur
dusts during the growing sea
son. Do not get lime sulphur on
painted buildings as it turns
paint black.

Assistant County Agent.
