Distance Runner Gunder Hagg,
the Swede with the wide stride,
got busy belatedly on his project
to set a new indoor world mile
record after a stormy voyage
across the Atlantic which took
only 13 days less than the trip
by Christopher Columbus to dis
cover America.
Hagg arrived last night with
Hurdler Haakon Lidman in
convoy which was underway for
ii days.
"It was a very bad Journey
and l m not surprised It took us
almost as long as It did Colum
bus," Hagg said. "We haven't
trained since we had a chance to
work out at Hyde Park in Lon
don and I hope the American
public will forgive us If .ve don't
do too well against your compe
tition Saturday night."
Hagg asked to compete in the
two mile race which he said
would require less conditioning.

Hagg said, "Okay, fine, I will

Portland, March 2 B. C.
("Carl") Taylor, 57, assistant
general freight agent of the
Southern Pacific Company,
northern district, with headquar
ters in Portland died Wednes
day after a sudden heart attack.
A native of Utah, he. received
his early railroad training with
the O. W. R. R. & N. in Baker
and La Grande, later coming to
Portland as a ticket clerk with
the Northern Pacific Terminal
Company. He joined the S. P.
in Portland In June, 1913, and
was a traveling agent until De
cember, 1917, when he was fur
loughed fqr army service. After
serving in the Signal Corps for
two years, seeing overseas serv
ice, he returned to the Southern
Pacific.

(U.R) Even the capture of the
Japanese homelands may not
mean the end of the war in the
Pacific, Vice-Adm. John S. Mc
Cain, commander of the famed
second carrier task force, warned
today.
The admiral, home on a 30
day leave, was jubilant, how
ever, about the progress of
American troops in that theatre.
The Japs, whom he referred to
as "sub-humans," are taking "an
awful licking," McCain said, and
"may crack up any day."
Japan proper may be taken
faster than even the joint chiefs
of staff now believe, McCain told
a press conference yesterday,
"but it will be a long time before
the war ends if the Japs are able
to move to Manchuria.
