Carl Elhart, insurance sales
man and basketball enthusiast,
is a man after our own heart
He suggests a change in basket
ball which has nothing to do
with the rules.
Elhart is a man who takes
his basketball seriously, romp
ing up end down the sidelines
and often hooting at decisions
made by the officials, only later
to find he didn't understand for
what the foul was called.
"An attachment in connection
with the electric scoreboards
which would show for what the
foul was called would be a great
aid to fans," Elhart claims. He
says a board could be construct
ed with places for various rules
infractions with a light behind
each which would light up be
hind the called infraction. He
feels this would greatly aid spec
tators who often do not see the
foul called by a referee, result
ing in booing. '
Official Signals
The national rules committee,
in their 1944-48 rule book, pub
lished recommended' signals for
various fouls, but nowhere could
we find a rule which compels
referees to use the signals. Even
If they were compelled to do so,
there would be many spectators
in the audience who would not
understand the signal given.
Sometimes officials call out the
infraction but there often is too
much noise for this to be heard
in the far corners of the gym.
not to mention the scorers along
the sidelines.
There is no doubt in our minds
but that Elhart's suggestion
would be a big boon to basket
ball from a spectator's stand-
