Diversify Your Investments
Babson Suggests Ten Groups

week, let me talk oa the neces
sity of dividing up your invest
merits in order to get safety. In
other words don't put too
many eggs In any one basket
U you have $10,000 invested or
to invest, divide it among ten
groups ol securities. The follow
ing groups and ideas are not the
only ones to consider, but they
aerve as illustrations.
(1) MANUFACTURING! Se
lect some company like a paper,
textile or oil company which is
In a "repeat" business rather
than company dealing in
equipment which lasts a life
time. Thus, beware of many
shipbuilding, aviation or ma
chine tools at this time.
(2) PUBLIC UTILITIES) Se
lect the stock of some -good
company which Is being elimi
nated by the Securities & Ex
change Commission and which
should liquidate for consider
ably more than the present
market price. Stocks which
' fulfill such requirements may
be immune from stock market
inking spells.
(3) MERCHANDISE BTOCKSi
Visit the variety chain stores in
your city. Pick out the two or
three which you like the best
Ask your local banker which of
these have their stock listed on
the New York Stock Exchange.
Buy the one which yields you
the most annual income.
(4) FIRE INSURANCE
STOCKS! Look at your insur
ance policies and buy the stock
of the company which has been
doing business the longest'num-
. ber of years. I also like good
casualty stocks. Both types
combine ownership of a business
and participation in a large list
of good Investments. I
BANK STOCKS! Buy
either the stock of the local
bank with which you deal or
else buy the stock of the New
York City bank which your lo
cal bank uses as a correspond
ent. Besides earning money on
eervlces rendered, most banks
now earn on large Government
bond holdings.
(6) BUILDING BTOCKSi
These should be good although
they already are selling1 rather
high due to the big building
'boom expected after the war.
Choose one manufacturing
building materials and one mak
ing house furnishings. 1 also

tain of the steels.
(7) CHEMICAL BTOCKSi
These also are selling pretty
high now; but we are going in
to a chemical age and many
miracles are ahead of us. For
Instance Dow Chemical is mak
ing products from sea-waterl
Remember that while our agri
cultural soils are getting poorer
every year, the ocean is con
stantly getting richer in chem
icals and minerals.
(8) TRANSPORTA TION
BTOCKSi Probably everyone
should own a little stock of
some well established automo
bile company. Certainly, these
should be safer to hold than
most railroad stocks. I think
nearly all railroads will suffer
in the postwar period. Airplane
transportation stocks are now
fairly high. .
(9) MINING BTOCKSi This
may not be the time to buy any
mining stocks; but if so. one
should buy the stock of a com
pany which is also well estab
lished in the fabricating end.
(10) FOOD STOCKS! This
group Includes the baking com
panies, canning companies and
other food processing com
panies. Personally, I would
rather buy the stock of some
good grocery chain than tie my
self down to any one of the man
ufacturers. If, however, you
want a strictly "food stock". I
suppose one having both "neces
sity" and "luxury" foods would
be my choice.
Please remember I give the
above simply as illustrations
there are other good groups and
ideas which I have not includ
ed. In this great country there
are many good companies. But
whatever you buydiversify!

The Senate Foreign Relations
Committee today approved the
disputed U. 8. Mexican water
treaty by a vote of 18 to 4.
Ben. Hiram Johnson, R., Calif.,
who led the opposition to the
treaty during the weeks of hear
ings, was downcast. He said he
didn't think the Senate would
reject It.
The treaty would apportion
waters of the Colorado and Rio
Grande rivers between this
country and Mexico.
Churchill Observe
Customs In Arabia
Cairo, Feb. 23 (U.R) Prime
Minister Churchill gave way to
Arabian customs during his con
ference with middle eastern
rulers. -
Not once did he smoke his
traditional cigar at the meetings,
And his gesture did not go un
noticed.
Smoking Is considered sinful
In the Arabian peninsula and
King Ibn Sauc" was said to have
greatly appreciated Churchill's
tactfullness.

BENEFIT DANCE FEB. 24
Central Point, Feb. 23 A
dance will be given at Central
Point Grange hall tomorrow
nlcht. Dancing will be from 8:30
until 12 o'clock and the public
is Invited to attend. Both mod'
ern and old-time dances will be
on the orosram.
This is the second of a series
of dances given to raise funds
for repairs and additions to the
hall. The first attracted an un
usually large number of people
and was considered an outstand
ing success.

A light snow was falling this
morning at Fish Lake, accord'

been melting the last few days.
During last night snow fell at
Prospect but melted as it tell,

Fence-posts of the area had an
