Wall Street
New York, Feb. 21 (U.PJ
Stocks had their widest decline
of the year today on what Wall
Street interpreted as a federal
reserve drive to eliminate all
speculation from the markets.
Transactions, though slightly
under yesterday, exceeded the
million share mark for the 18th
consecutive full session.
Principal ' reason given for
the decline was the recommend
ation of Marrlner S. Eccles,
chairman of the Federal Re
serve Board, that a wartime ex
cess profits tax be applied to
speculative gains on stocks and
real estate. However, technical
factors also played a part since
the market had risen for eight
straight sessions to new highs
for more than seven years.
