In a Bis War
' About S000 tons of fresh vege
tables are expected to be har
vested each month from over
10,000 planted acres on Guam,
Baipan, and Tlnlnn, the Foreign
Economle Administration - re
ports. ' Farm projects of this type are
set up by TFA wherever the
Navy requests such a service.
They save shipping tonnage, re
lieve the drain on native foods,
and add variety to the military
diet. Technical assistance, tools,
teed end farm equipment are
provided by the agency. Truck
gardens In the South Pacific
netted about 6 million pounds
of fresh vegetables from July to
October, 1944, including cucum
bers, watermelons, corn, canto
loupe, radishes, lettuce, pota
toes, cabbage and tomatoes. A
few crops tried experimentally
will be abandoned turnips are
unpopular with the , troops:
spinach, peas, and string beans
take too long to prepare and
cook; and Irish potatoes, though
popular, have proved unsuccess
ful. R. O. FOWLER,
County Agent.
Late Born Stock
Best for Show
Pigs and lambs fed as fat
stock for the 4-H Auction should
be born in March or April of this
year.
It Is usually rather difficult
to find lambs born as late as this,
but there are usually a few late
lambs In every flock and these
are often available to 4-H Club
members.
Indications are that pigs will
be rather scarce this year due to
a decrease in the number of
brood sows kept for farrowing.
Any club member who is plan
ning to raise a pig should speak
for his animal as soon as he can
get one located.
The 4-H Club agent will assist
In the location of stock for any
club member who desires this
help.

Dry Groups All
Aglow Over New
Midnight Curfew
Washington, Feb. 21 (UP)
Cafe society and the' boys in the
back room may weep at the cur
few on night life, but the anti
saloon league and other dry
groups said today it was down
right wonderful.
Makes for less drinking all
around, they said in applauding
Mobilization Director James F.
Byrnes for ordering bars, thea
ters and other night spots to shut
down at midnight beginning
next Monday,
The drys said they didn't have
much hope that Byrnes' edict
heralded an official trend to
ward outright prohibition. But
Dr. Ernest H, Cherrington, ex
ecutive secretary of the Metho
dist board of temperance, did
think that the temperance situa
tion was getting brighter each
day.
"The tendency to get beastly
drunk is not as great as it used
to be," he said.

determination of Gov. Thomas
E. Dewey, titular leader of the

lative approval of an unpreced

voters.
Dewey defied conservative

of the state measure, which
would outlaw discrimination In
employment because of race,
color, ereed or national origin.
The bill now is believed to be
