Japanese on the home front are
. pulling their belts tighter.
An Office of War Information
report revealed today that
things are far from rosy In the
.land of the rising sun.
But as yet, it said, there Is no
Indication of a crack in mo
rale." The report, based on in
formation from various govern
ment agencies, also said:

The Japanese are living on 20
per cent less food than they had
before the war. Compare that
with this country's nine per cent
rise in food consumption over
prewar levels.
All food and clothing, as well
as matches, medicine, gasoline
and fuel are rationed sugar at
a half-pound per person
month, vegetables four pounds
and rice allotments 20 poundi
a reduction of 10 pounds month
ly since 1943.

The greetings must be sent
first class In sealed envelopes.

schedule of 11 games, 10 of
which will be played against
bay region service teams and
one against the Portland Beav
ers, at San Jose March 16.

Far Pacific Of sixteen major
assault-invasions launched by
U. S. forces against the Japs In
1944, four, or one-quarter of the
total, were sprung by the famed
41st Infantry Division.
The amphibious attacks and
subsequent conquests of Aitape,
Hollandia, Wake and Biak were
accomplished by the 41st.
The other twelve Pacific In
vasions were, chronologically
Saldor, the Marshalls, the Ad
miralty, Saipan, Guam, Noem-
foor, Sansapor, Morotal, Palau
Leyte, Ormoc and Mindoro. A
grand total of 20-odd divisions,
including Marines, handled those
assignments.
The 41st, commanded by Ma.
Gen. Jena A. Doe, is the most
veteran outfit in the Southwest
Pacific, now serving its 34th
month overseas. In addition to
the aformentloned actions, the
division in 1943 participated in
the Jungle fighting at Buna,
Sanananda and Salamaua. Dur
ing the latter campaign the
Jungleers established a world
record for continuous fighting
in foxholes by enduring 76 con
secutive days and nights without
relief or surcease.
Three times has President
Roosevelt conferred Unit Cita
tions on the 41sters, a record no
other Army division has attained
in the Pacific war.
The original Oregon National
Guard division, the personnel of
the 41st Is largely drawn from
the Beaver state.

man for the Central Point squad
with a total of SO points and an
average of 15 points per game.
