all fish and shell-fish from the
sea are rich in iodine, whetH
consumer raw, cooked, canned,
dried smoked or salted. Dried
kelp and Irish moss (otherwise
known as chondrus and carra
geen) contain some iodine.
In the Great Lakes basin ( In
Canada and in the United States)
the soil Is poor in iodine, like
wise the drinking water and the
food (vegetables, cereals, fruits,
milk, eggs, meats) grown on the
soil. Hence endemic goitre pre
vails in that region of the coun
' try and people living there, as
well as livestock, require some
regular iodine ration to supple
ment the natural iodine in food
and water.
Since the use of iodized salt
Instead of ordinary salt has be
come popular in the entire Great
Lakes region, the prevalence of
simple goitre among school chil
dren and older persons has
shown a striking decrease. More
over the number of operations
for all forms of goitre In the
large hospitals has diminished.
Iodized salt looks, tastes and in
every way is the same as ordi
nary salt, and 4t costs the same.
It contains little If any more
Iodine than one gets in, say, can
ned salmon probably a pound
of canned salmon contains as
much iodine as pound of
iodized salt. So it la absurd to

Manila. Feb. 19 U.R) Seven
thousand persons were liberated
Saturday when American infan
try units stormed the Philippines
General hospital in the Ermita
section of Manila and wiped out
fanatical Japanese defenders.
The liberated Included 800 pa
tients, including 42 American
civilians. The others were resi
dents of the district who had
taken refuge in the hospital dur
ing the fighting.
The hospital was taken at
noon, after two days of hard
fighting, by units of the 148th in
fantry of the 37th division, com
manded by Lt. Col. Herbert W.
Radcllffe of Kenton, O.
Hospital Fortified
The Japanese had pillboxes at
the approaches to the hospital
and had fortified several build
. ings surrounding the main
building.
Tanks knocked out the pill
boxes and laid down a smoke
screen to cover the Infantrymen
when they charged the build
ings. More than 200 Japanese
were killed.

The story of how a service
man outsmarted the Japanese
while working in a Philippine
islands prison camp motor pool,
was recently published in the
Yreka (Cal.) Journal. The young
man, Bailey Soule, is a nephew
of Dr. A. A. Soule of Medford
and the son of Mrs. Andrew
Soule of Little Shasta. Calif.
A comrade of young Soule, Bob
Kirker of Auburn, Cal., wrote
Mrs. Soule details of their in
ternment, how her son outwitted
his captors while presumably
"working" in the motor pool and
how, in spite of adversities,
laughed and sang and kept his
fellow prisoners in better spirits.
"He and other men had to
work in a Jap motor pool in
Davao for about a year," Kirker
wrote. "Naturally, none of them
wanted to but they knew they
had to anyhow so they made the
best of it. They ate better and
got much better treatment than
the rest of the men.
"Bailey used to divide the
week into sections. One day he
would tear down carburetors and
see how many parts he could
lose. Another day would be mu
sic appreciation day and he
would fix one truck and then
long and sing. They never did ac
complish anything there. They
would fix one true kand then
take parts oft of it to fix an
other. Orchestra Formed
"In Malaybalay he had an or
chestra and played the clarinet
and trumpet. While at the Davao
motor pool he got some string
some place and made a ukulele
out of a coconut shell and some
camphor wood, I think, for the
neck.
"Of course, you know what a
sense of humor he had. He used
to sit around by the hour and
keep us in stitches all of the
time. He was always in good
spirits."
Both Soule and Kirker were
on the Japanese ship transferring
prisoners between islands when
it was torpedoed by a United
States submarine in the Philip
pine sea last September. Soule
was not seen again, but Kirker
was one of 83 men rescued. One
of his companions was Sgt. BUI
Lorton of Medford, now home on
a month's furlough after being
hospitalized in Australia before
returning to this country. Kirker
was still hospitalized at the time
of writing to Mrs. Soule of her
son. .
