Pear Growing. Storage. Ripening
Discussed By S. M. Tuttle, Head
Of Southern Oregon Sales Inc.
Ashland, Feb. 19 Leader-,
ship of the Jackson county area
in the winter pear industry and
many extremely Interesting facts
about pears, their growth, stor
age and sale, were explained to
the Rotary club last week dur
ing Its regular weekly meeting
by S. M. Tuttle, of the Southern
Oregon Sales company, of Med
ford, one of the leading, com
panies in the pear Industry.
Pears are a distinct Pacific
coast industry, he stated, as
more than half of tha pear trees
in the United States are in Ore
gon, Washington and California.
This is emphasized more by the
fact that these three states pro
duce 70 per cent of tha country's
pears and actually mora than 90
per cent of the carload ship
ments of commercial pears.
Much Labor Needed
The vast amount of labor re
quired by the pear Industry was
pointed out. It requires one man
hour of labor to 'produce each
box of pears and on this basis
three and a half million man
power hours are spent In pro
ducing pears In Oregon. This
with the million man-hours of
labor for storage and other
handling equals the grand total
of four and a half million man.
hours devoted to pears, which
makes the pear industry one of
the leading industries In this
area.
Winter Paara Topa
Since there are only 19,000
acres In pear cultivation In Ore
gon, pears require more labor
and produce a larger payroll
than most industries. The pear-
gift-box industry produces an
additional large Income to this
particular area, since most of
the gift-box production la In
Jackson county.
Winter pears, D'Anlous, Bosc,
Cornice and Winter Nellls, are
the most Important commercial
pears and Oregon produces 92
per ' cent of the winter pears
from the coast states.
The Rogue "River area, com
monly known as the Medford
area, Is prominent In the pear
industry, as much of the organi
zation which is classified as
the most highly organized unit
of agriculture originated tn
Medford. An eastern promotion
bureau U maintained by the
industry and an Intensive ad
vertising campaign has been
continued for many years, be
ing intensified recently despite
the fact that the demand ex
ceeds the supply, with the result
that today the average consump
tion of pears is 29 and a half
boxes per 1,000 population, in
comparison to the consumption
of only 18 boxes per l.ouo in
1930.
Shipped Over World
Two hundred thousand boxes
of Cornice are used annually
for the gift box trade, Tuttle
stated, and pears In fancy gift
boxes are shipped to all parts of
the world.
The maturing of pears was
one ot the most Interesting parts
of his talk. After a pear trqe Is
In full bloom, heat, rain or other
factors do not have any effect
on the period required for ma
turing of the fruit. It has been
established, he stated, that
D'Anjous, for instance, mature
in 126 days after the tree is in
full bloom, despite any weather
conditions.
Ripening of the pears after
being packed Is rather compli
cated, but artificial ripening is

absolutely necessary and has
been developed remarkably by
the industry. A high humidity
necessary In ripening and a tem
perature of approximately 70
degrees Is the best, combined
with humidity, such as Is found
In the kitchen, ha stated, not in
living rooms where the humidi
ity la usually low.
How to Rtpaa
Re stated the best way ti to
cover the peara with a wet cloth
and keep them at approximately
70 degrees. In commercial stor
age, the pears are kept at a tem
perature of from 29 to 31 and
he stated that; due to chemical
action, If the temperature were
to be 33 to 45, the pears would
never ripen, but merely rot.
There Is a method of hasten.
Ing the ripening of pears, but it
canot be done by excessive heat
alone, for pears at a temperature
of 70 degrees, for instance, rot
before they ripen. Do not put
the pears In your refrigerator, v
he stated, until they are ripened.
A method of ripening pears in
a very short time has been de
veloped by the use of the ethy
lene gas, which is the gas from
rotting fruit, but the system ap
peared too complicated for ama
teurs. . '
