Medford bids farewell tomor
row to Virgil Swanson, who
leaves for army induction at Fort
Lewis, Wash. Swanson has been
associated with the sports pic
ture In Rogue River valley for
years and his services will he
greatly missed by those with
whom he has worked. After his
arrival at Fort Lewis, Swanson
says he will apply for entrance
into the navy.
He Is a former basketball and
football star at Medford high
school and was quarterback on
Prink Calllson's 1027 grid team
which walloped McLoughlin
high of Milton-Freewater 45 to
0 for the state championship. He
played forward on Calllson's
1027-28 basketball squad which
lost out to Washington high of
Portland in two overtime pe
riods, by two points, for the state
basketball crown.
Swanson, 35 year old em
ployee of the Medford postofflce,
has been a basketball referee in
the county "A" and "B" lea
gues off and on for 10 years and
has worked several of Medford's
games this season. For several
years he played independent bas
ketball in the county and also
was a baseball player with Inde
pendent teams and held down
center field with the Craters
for one season. For 12 years
Swanson has been usher and
ticket taker for Mack Llllard at
the Armory wrestling matches.
Mrs. Swanson and daughter,
Barbara Lee, will make their
home with Mrs. Swanson's
mother, Mrs. Lee Wakefield, at
Jacksonville during his absence.
Medford hlgh'a casaba crew
will win the district basketball
tournament at Ashland Feb. 23
and 24 and go on to annex the
state , title at Salem March 15,
16 and 17, so says the "talking
table" to which we were Intro
duced recently.
Just how the thing works Is
beyond the narrow limits of our
mentality. Four people gathered
around an ordinary card table
with their hands placed lightly
on It, legs not touching. After
several minutes of repeating a
chant, one side of the table
slowly lifted, believe it or not.
After asking the table several
questions to which It tapped out
answers, we asked It If Al Simp
son's gang would win the dis
trict title; tap once for yes and
twice tor no. It tapped once.
Then we asked If they would
win the state toga again it
tapped once.
Not being acquainted with the
i powers of the supernatural and
not wishing t go against same,
we are inclined to string along
with the table in its selection of
Medford as the district and state
champions.
