Wife Says Charges Silly,
and Baby His; Annulment
Suit Filed.

Navy Lt. Clyde Monaghan's
charges that he was forced by
his commanding officer into a
"shot-gun" wedding with a wom
an expecting another man's baby,
today were characterized by his
wife as "utterly ridiculous."
"The baby has been born and
it is his," said Mrs. Nancy Mon
aghan at the home of her moth
er. Mrs. W. R. Hillberg,, in
Washington, D. C. "The whole
thing is utterly ridiculous."
The 30-year-old navy pilot,
stationed at Floyd Bennett Field,
N. Y., but currently "on mis
sion" and not reachable, filed
suit for annulment of the mar
riage in Superior Court here
Friday.
The commanding officer at
the Atlanta, Ga., naval air sta
tion, he charged, told him to
chose between a bride and the
brig when Nancy told the Co's
wife she was expecting a child,
and that Monaghan was the
father.
Then, said Monaghan, his su
perior officer who was un
named in the suit arranged
everything. He furnished the
house, the ring, the license and
even the best man for the cere
mony, which tdbk place Nov
16. 1943.
Monaghan said he had never

Mrs. Monaghan as having
threatened to show Monaghan
"the way out of the navy" un
less he married her within 24
hours. She 'was then, the suit
said, a house guest at the com
manding officer's home.
. Monaghan charged that Nancy
also promised him a divorce af
ter the birth of the baby, and
said that she was currently
drawing a $175 monthly allot
ment from the navy. They naa
never lived together as man and
wife, the suit added.
