ACCIDENTAL BLAST
Theodore Earle Yorton, S 1c,
USNR, has been reported killed
in action, in a telegram from
Vice Admiral Randall Jacobs,
chief of naval personnel, Wash
ington, to his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Earle B. Yorton, route 3,
box 476.
The message, received Tues
day, said the 19-year-old navy
man died as a result of an acci
dental explosion November 10,
1944. The war department de
clared that further hope of his
survival was unlikely and that
he had been officially declared
dead. A communication received
last November 30 had reported
the boy as missing. Mrs. Yorton
said her son's ship was an am
munition carrier, and he was a
gunner's mate.
The Yortons have lived In
Jackson county since 1927. Sea
man Yorton attended Medford
high school for three years prior
to his enlistment in the navy
.in August, 1943. He completed
boot training at Farragut, Idaho,
and graduated from the U. S.
naval gunnery school at Lake
Union, Seattle, before going on
duty in the southwest Pacific
theater of war.
.-' Besides his parents, Yorton is
survived by a brother, Bryan
M., a pharmacist s mate 2c, who
Is serving in a surgical team on
a LST boat-in the Philippine
islands; a sister, Marine P., em
ployed by the U. S. National
bank, Medford, and a younger
, brother, Bernett Yorton, a jun
ior at Medford high schpol.

Beberniss who died Wednesday
afternoon when the logging
truck he was driving left the
road near Cascade Gorge and
rolled down a steep embank
ment. The Rev. L. C; Kirby of
the First Methodist church will
officiate and interment will be

Mr. Beberniss had been a resi
dent of Medford for four years.
In January, 1943, he was induct
ed into -the service from Med
ford and received an honorable
discharge in October of 1944.
He was married to Mary Hem
merling October 30, 1941,. in
Medford. He leaves to mourn his
passing his wife, Mary; his moth
er, Mrs. Paula Beberniss of Med
ford; one sister, Mrs. Meta Wy
koff of Medford; two brothers,
Marvin, serving in the armed
forces overseas, and LeRoy, liv
ing in California. He is also sur
vived by his grandmother, Mrs.
Anna Gosda of Grand Island,
Neb., and other relatives.
Mr. Beberniss was born in
Grand Island, Neb., October 28,
1916.
NEW SAW SHOP OPENS
ON SOUTH RIVERSIDE
W. (Bill) Malone, who has
had 25 years experience in Ore
gon and Washington, has open
ed a saw shop at 765 South Riv
erside avenue. Malone stated he
will have complete service for
logging and mill supplies and
will maintain day and . night
service as well as pick-up and
delivery service. The shop will
be able to repair saws up to 84
inches in size, Malone said.
The new business will be
known as Medford Saw. Shop.

CLARA BELLE PURUCKER
Mrs. Clara Belle Purucker, be
loved resident of Medford,
where she has lived for the past
35 years, passed away, at the
family home, 106 South Orange
street, this morning.
A complete obituary will be
published Sunday with the day
and time of funeral services.

COGGIN3 INFANT
. Ralh Edward Coggins, infant
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Coggins of Rt. 4, Medford,
passed away Thursday at a lo
cal hospital. He was born at
Erie, Kans., on November 18,
1942. His parents moved - to
Medford last August.
Left to mourn are his parents
and two brothers, Paul and
Eugene, and one sister, Ruth
Ann, also his grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Coggins of
Medford, and Paul E. Cravens,
of Erie, Kans.
Private funeral services will
be held Saturday at 10:30 a. m.
at the Perl Funeral home. The
Rev. L. C. Kirby of the First
Methodist Church will officiate
and interment will be in Phoe
nix Cemetery.

RALPH COOK IS
NAMED HEAD OF
MEDFORD YMCA
Ralph Cook was elected presi
dent of the Medford YMCA at
a meeting of the newly elected
board of directors held last night
at the "Y" club rooms. He suc
ceeds Dr. Bert R. Elliott who
aided with organization of the
group several months ago and
served as first president of the
board.
. B. L. Nutting was named vice
president; Charles Newland,
treasurer, and I. E. Schuler, sec
retary.
Commenting on the remark
able progress of the new organi
zation during its brief existence
here, E. C. Corn spoke during
the meeting. He declared that
the "Y" was filling a very defi
nite need for the youth of Med
ford and added that nothing of
fers a larger challenge than the
YMCA when it functions In its
fullness.
Present 'teen age membership
of the "Y" club is 289 according
to a report by Ben Schmidt,
secretary - of , the organization.
Other members number 187, he
said, and reported that the week
ly attendance averaged between
700 and 800 boys, 125 to 175
girls, 10 to 15 adults, and 5 to
15 'teen age visitors.
Sub-groups of the "Y" club
already organized are a camera
club, stamp collectors' club, a
dancing group, a ping pong
group and a Hi-Y club. Activi
ties during the month include
three dances, 10 "feed" nights,
bowling contests, checkers, car
oms, and rummy games and jig
saw puzzles.
The secretary reported that
his activities have included 58
talks before groups of all types
and counciling meetings with 66
boys, 12 girls and 18 parents.
During the meeting a letter
of resignation was read from
Herb Grey who stated that pres
sure of other civic activities at
this time prevented him from
serving on the board. It was
stated that the board hoped Mr.
Grey would resume member
ship with the group at some
later date.
Rev. Seals Ending
Nazarene Revival
On Sunday Night
' Sunday will be the closing day
of the revival, series currently
being held at the Medford
Church of the Nazarene by the
Kev. B. V. Seals, known as the
"big Texan." He will speak to
night on "God's Master Gift,
Grace." There will be no service
tomorrow night.
Sunday morning the evangel
ist will speak to the Sunday
school at 9:45 o'clock and at
10:45 his topic will be "The Love
Tragedy of the Cross." His final
appearance will be Sunday at
7:30 p. m. when the evangelist
will speak on "God's Ander to
Man s Destiny."
At 3 p. m. Sunday the Rev.
and Mrs. Seals will both speak
at a general n:ass meeting at the
church, Mrs. Seals also being a
well-known evangelist and
speaker.
Music for the campaign is un
der the supervision of John Eby,

attended the Achievement Coun
cil Thursday evening in Wash
ington school gym. According to
Cubmaster Carlos Morris the
meeting drew the largest attend
ance in five years.

in the Pack. Following pledge
to the flag, led by Den Chief

WAR ON AXIS DECIDED

decided to declare war on the
Axis powers, it was officially
announced.
