THE IODINE SHORTAGE IN
IODIZE
In the pamphlet "Inatructlona
for Taking an Iodine Ration"
(copy mailed on request It you
provide lump
ed envelope
bearing your
address, a clip
ping will not
suffice) I say:
In young
persons a
shortage of io
dine is com
monly respon
sible for sim
ple goitre. In
various cities
Dr. Brady m Ohio, Mich
, igan and other states, as many
as thirty per cent of all the
school children show some en
largement of the thyroid gland;
in one Grand Rapids high school
half of the pupils had goitre,
and out of 12,631 school boys
examined in Grand Rapids, 2,
603 had goitre, and out of 14,
- 548 girls 5,236 had goitre, many
of these boys and girls less than
ten years old . . ."
The Grand Rapids Chamber
of Commerce executive execu
tive secretary writes . me that
"one of our members has just
brought to our attention ... we
checked up this matter with our
city health officer. ... He in
forms us that the condition
quoted in your pamphlet was
true 29 years ago . . . but that
. . for several years past the in
cidence of goiter in Grand Rap
ids is insignificant if not almost
nil. Much of the credit for this
is given to the widespread use
of iodized salt. Therefore we
believe it is not fair for you . .
to give the reader of your pam
phlet the implication that the
condition exists today ... we
are not proud of that record.
There is an error in the pas
sage quoted from the pamphlet,
n obvious error. It reads: "All
the school children show some
enlargement of the thyroid",
where obviously it should read
"all the school children showed
. some enlargement of the thy
roid'", for the past tense is used

BILL IS CHANGED;
PLAN NEW STUDY
Salem. Ore., Feb. 16 (U.PJ
House bill 271, the measure de
signed to establish a department
of veterans affairs, will go back
to the houre soon, the houso
military affairs committee de

It will be printed to incorpor
ate some suggested amendments
and then will be re-refcrred to
the committee for further study.
Two sets of proposed amend
ments to the bill were told at the
meeting one embodied the sug
gestions set forth by a group of
veterans' organizations to elim
inate some objections they had
to the original measure. The sec
ond set includes a number of
suggestions which have been
made to tho committee by a
number of sources.

Grand Rapids.
My thanks to the Grand Rap
Ids Chamber of Commerce. I
am particularly glad to have the
assurance of the Grand Rapids
health officer that simple goitre
has been practically prevented
in an area where it was so prev
alent some years ago, by merely
seeing to it that every one gets
an adequate amount of iodine
in one form or another and as
the Chamber of Commerce let
ter says, most of the credit for
this is given to the wide-spread
use of iodized salt.
If I had my way there would
be no plain table salt sold in
this country, that is, for use as
a condiment. Only iodized salt
would be sold; The infinitesi
mal amount of iodine (in the
form of potassium iodide) in
iodized salt may possibly suf
fice for some persons who use
more than the ordinary amount
of salt dally, but Is probably
less than you would get in a
helping of, say, canned salmon
or dried codfish or almost any
fresh, dried, salt or canned sea
fish or shell fish you like), for
there is only about Vi grains
of potassium iodide in a whole
pound of iodized salt.

would aid the dlrccor who in
turn would be directly responsi

a fidelity bond equal to twice the

The powers of the director
would be somewhat less under
these provisions than under the

The second set of suggested
amendments broaden the scope
of the whole proposed setup by
creating a seven-man committee,
with five veteran representatives
and two public members to be
selected by tho governor.
