The cigarette shortage will prob
ably grow worse during 1943 and
about the only thing that can be
done about it is to see that avail
able smokes are spread around.
The Federal Trade Commis
sion arrived at that conclusion
today after an extensive investi
gation. It reported its findings
to .Chairman Burton K. Wheeler,
D., Mont., of the Senate Inter
state Commerce Committee who
requested the Inquiry.
Wheeler told the FTC he had
received complaints from retail
ers who were unable to get ciga
rettes to supply their customers.
He asked the FTC to see if the
shortage was artificial, or if any
laws were being violated in the
distribution of cigarettes.
No, the FTC said, the shortage
Is "directly traceable" to the
huge numbers of cigarettes go
ing to the armed forces and to
America's Allies. This big drain
on supplies, it added, war "mag
nified" by Increased smoking
here at home due .to bigger in
comes, to "overbuying" by peo
ple afraid of getting caught
short, and to Increased nervous
tension.

Medford Boy and Girl In Service
Enjoy Meeting In Distant Hawaii
Imagine the surprise of Med
ford WAVE Mary Wilson, new
ly arrived in Honolulu last
month, to see a truck drive down
a street displaying a sign, "Med
ford, Oregon God's Country."
Luckily for WAVE Wilson, the
truck drew up not far ahead and
she rushed up to find who might
be the driver of this special
truck. He turned out to be Eu
gene Holt, MM3c In the Seabees,
from Medford, of course, and the
two had a fine chat.
In addition to the story of the
truck, Miss Wilson described in
a recent letter to her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wilson,
Route 1, the arrival of the ship
in Honolulu with units of
SPARs, WAVEs and women of
the Marine corps and the hearty
welcome they received from
both civilians and service peo
ple of the islands. Miss Wilson
also wrote of a native feast
staged for the newcomers, add
ing that few of the young wom
en cared for the native food and
most returned to the post hun
gry. All were enjoying the
abundance of pineapple and
cocoanuts, however, she wrote.
Miss Wilson has been assigned
to duty in the office of the port
director in Honolulu, having
been in the office of the Seattle
port director before going over
seas. She has the rating of yeo
man second class. . .
. Young Holt has been overseas
for IS months. He was stationed
at Tarawa and other Pacific is
lands before being sent to Ha
waii. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. H. Holt, 18 Summit
avenue.
