rest in bed all the time, never

most energetic and sometimes it
Is almost impossible to keep him
quiet, and when he does become
active he is soon puffing and
breathing as hard as if he had

to obtain another opinion and

In the first place, the moder
ate activity I advocated, Instead
of prolonged rest, ' applied to
chronic heart, disease in adults
In this instance it seems clear
that notwithstanding the child's
natural desire and Inclination to
ploy actively the effort is detri
mental, since it produces such
hard breathing.

none I would recommend. - -
This child's parents evidently
believe a "specialist" is a su
perior kind or type of physician.
Their own doctor diagnosed the
heart trouble, but after all, It Is
the fashion to see a specialist or
a series of them. So the pedia

SOUGHT BY BILL
Salem, Ore., Feb. 7 (U.R)
Two bills to decrease the work
ing hours of police, firemen and
public works employes, had the
support of labor today after a
meeting of the senate labor and
Industries committee.
One calls for a 40-hour week
for all public works employees:
the other reduces the hours for
policemen to 40 weekly and to
48 for firemen.

OF SPECIALISM
fully confirmed the fumily doc-
tor's diagnosis which means
merely that two doctors agreed.
But still the parents yearned
for more glamour, and they
found It in the form of the heart
doctor. What amazes me Is that
the heart specialist or even a
good family physician would
feed a child aspirin In the
amount the correspondent men
tions.
Large doses of aspirin pro
duce weakness of the heart, de
gression of the respiratory and
vasoconstrictor centers, albu
min and casts In the urine and
collapse. Many persons have an
idiosyncrasy ' for aspirin and
even an ordinary dose in such
persons may cause feelings of
weakness, collapse, angioneu
rotic (giant hive) swellings of
face and throat, skin rasnes,
hives, and rrely death. Aside
from relieving ache or pain
for which aspirin is one of the
least dangerous agents we have
there Is no satisfactory evi
dence that aspirin has any cura
tive or nalliatlve value In rheu
matic heart disease or rheumatic
fever (acute infectious arthritis,
acute Inflammatory rheuma
tism). In view 'Of the depression
of the respiratory center pro
duced by aspirin perhaps the
labored breathing of this child
Is attributable to the treatment
as much as to the heart disease.
