IS FORECAST BY
SAFETHOUNCiL
Average American Has One
Chance In H of Being
Hurt In Accident
Br Albert P. Mayer
United Press Correspondent
Chicago, Feb'. 7 (U.R) The
National City ' Safety Council
took a look into the future to
day and found that the average
American has one chance in 14
of being injured in an accident
this year.
And that doesn't count the
scratch on Junior's leg or the
thumb father hit with the tack
hammer. An injury In the eyes
of the Safety Council is one
which causes temporary disability.
The council's statisticians
forecast the accident rate for
1945 in the hope the figures
would make people stop, look,
and listen and be more careful.
Farm Safest
The safest place to live, the
council concluded, Is a farm.
The chance of a farm resident
having, an accident injury in'
iaa is one in la. the statistics
showed.
According' to the council's
forecast, every American has a
l-ln-29 chance of being injured
in his home during the year.
The chance of being hurt on the
Job Is exactly the same as the
home Injury rate.
The Safety Council's survey
Indicated that the safest Indus
try Is communications where
the chance of being Injured In
an accident Is only one In 150.
The next safest, the council
found, is the explosives indus
try where the chances for injury
are one in a hundred.
The low rate of Injury in such
seemingly dangerous industries
can be traced to the constant
guard against accidents in those
occupations, the council said.
The investigation disclosed
that the miner holds the most
dangerous Industrial Job. The
council estimated that the miner
has a l-ln-8 chance of being
hurt in 1945. A farm .worker,
on the other hand, has only one
chance in 36 of being hurt, ac
cording to the Safety Council
estimates.
Break For Pedestrians
It will be a fairly safe vear
for pedestrians, whose chances
of being Involved in an automo
bile accident are one in 570,
me council snld.
And the statisticians have a
word of warning for the drink-
Ing driver. His chances of be
ing In an accident are 55 times
greater than those of the sober
motorist.
There Is only one chance In
20,200 of being drowned this
year, the figures showed, and
the chance of dying from burns
is one in 12.850.
The council found there Isn't
much to worry about while
traveling on a train. The sta
tisticians' estimates show that
you have one chance in 1,620
000 of being killed in railroad
accidents.
