Many items ranging from
clear nail polish to sandpaper
and shoe cream can be used
these days to keep good but
worn handbags presentable
New leather bags are scarce and
all kinds are expensive com
pared with prewar prices. The
following suggestions for clean
ing and mending these are of
fered by Lucy Lane, extension
specialist in clothing and textiles
at O.S.C.
Clean fabric bags with dry-,
cleaning fluid, but do not use
this fluid on leather because It
removes natural oils and may
make leather crack. Shiny spots
on suede can often be removed
by rubbing with fine sandpaper
Matching shoe dye or India ink
will help retouch scratched and
worn corners on leather. To hide
water spots and other stains on
leather, use a colored shoe
cream, or a wax polish.
Shine Trimming!
Use silver polish to shine
metal trimmings or to remove
gold plating that has started to
wear. A protective coating oi
clear, colorless nail polish will
keep metal finish bright, but be
cause it rubs off, it must be re
newed occasionally.
It a leather or fabric purse Is
stitched outside, worn places ai
outside seams can be neatly re
paired. Rip the seam with a
razor blade; fold worn places In,
taking a deeper seam, and re
stitch. Stitching on purses usual
ly must be done by hand. Back
stitching and buttonhole twist
heavy-duty, or linen thread
makes a firm seam. Waxing the
thread makes it pull through
more easily. It is best not to
attempt outside repairs on a
purse seamed inside and clamp
ed into a frame.
It a zipper stop has broken at
the bottom and the slide has
pulled off, hold the teeth to
gether and slip the slide on again
at the bottom. A slide that pulls
off at the top can only be put
on again at the. bottom. To-do
this, remove the bottom stop,
hold the teeth together, and coax
slide on. Replace stop by stitch
ing firmly across trie end by
hand.
A leather bag that has become
limp may need nothing more
than new cardboard stiffening
between the lining and leather.

Mall bag: I'r heard so much
about the vast gult lying be
tween the G Is and officers, I
Just up and asked a number on
Doth aides to give me the low
down; here is what a captain in
the air force In Europe wrote me
regarding fits. He says, "Your
question about the social differ
ence being shown between offi
cers and men under them would
indicate that some are badly
Informed I don't know too much
about ground personnel but am
up on the relationship in the
air corps.
"'I've gone Into crowded Eng
lish restaurants and seen GI's at
a four-place table and nave sat
down with them and there was
no thought either in their minds
or mine, that a difference exist
ed. I've been one of several offi
cers at a table and had a GI sit
down with us.
"Maybe the. fact that in tha
air we are so inter-dependent
makes us Just one big happy ,
family. Rank is never consid
ered, though of course in the
air, the pilot's word is law.
When we go on pass as a crew,
we go together; all ten of us; ,
four officers and six enlisted
men; and have one big time.
"For myself, I know it I had
n't got quite a few lucky breaks
I would still be a buck private.
I've dozens-of friendaln the
army, ' from pfe's to sgts. who
are so much superior to myself
in intelligence and education
that they make me feel quit
illiterate." , .
And then from a farm woman
turned war worker comes this
cry ot heart agony. "Were I at -
home on the farm now, I'd tut
In the barn a lot of the time
looking over spray equipment
and fixing boxes for the fall
harvest. The dog would be with
me, smelling out mice. I'd pride
fully Inspect the pruning Job I'd
done in the tall. I took such
pride In our orchard. Once I
cut over two feet of rot out of
a cherry tree and every one told
me the treo would die. But it
didn't!
"Before we got the ranch, the
walnut trees hadn't borne any
nuts and had shed their leaves
in August My attention changed
all that and I'm told that this
fall they yielded quite heavily.
Yet I'm not there to see for I'm
a war worker My husband is in
the service and I think I will
enlist too. 1 feel so bewildered
and alone."
Letters from service men's
wives have greatly Increased.
Many timos I get the feeling
they've not written to me at all.
Rather are those letters an out
pouring of the bewilderment and
lonliness they must refrain from
telling thelt absent loved ones.
Especially do I know this is so
of the girl who writes quite fre
quently but never signs her
name. .
