ROCKET PROVING
OF GREAT VALUE
NAVY JAN SAYS
Believes Weapon Essential
To Success of Future
Triphibious Operations.
patrols who fought brisk actions
with the Germans, one recon
naissance party went well north
of Piansiatico, 14 miles north
west of Pistola, without finding
an enemy force.
On the 8th army front to tne
east a patrol probing the area
around Chuffiano likewise was
unable to contact the enemy.
By Rear Adm. George F. Hussey
Chief, Navy Bureau 01
Ordnance '
(Written for United Press)
Washington. Jan. 27 U.PJ In
the triphibious war we are wag
ing, the rocket is proving a tac
tical weapon of immense and in-
- creasing value.
While rockets will not dis
place guns In the foreseeable
future, their performance in ac
ton has demonstrated their su
periority over traditional pro
jectiles in certain phases of mil
itary operations, and their po
tentialities for additional uses
are considerable. They deserve,
and are receiving, increased
operational and developmental
attention.
Navy Up Production
The navy considers rockets
so essential to the success of
forthcoming operations that it
Is calling for a 300 per cent In
crease in their production dur
ing the next few months. Pro
duction in the last quarter of
1945 will exceed 600 per cent
of the production in the fourth
quarter of 1944. The 1945 rock
et production schedule is a $1,
000,000,000 program. This in
volves vastly increased require
ments for steel, manufacturing
manpower, assembly and load
ing facilities.
Now in production by the
navy's bureau of ordnance are
seven main calibers of rockets.
They are of three general types
aircraft, barrage, and special
purpose. New ones, under de
velopment, will be in produc
tion soon. Rockets of greater
saliber and accuracy will be
available in the near future to
bite into enemy defenses. In
general, rockets will parallel
projectile calibers and bombs
of substantial size.
Keep Other Weapons .
This does not mean that rock-
. ets will take the place of other
weapons to any substantial de
gree. Their role in modern war
fare is more properly to com
plement, to deliver the punch
in circumstances which limit
the effectiveness of other forms
, of firepower.
Both rockets -and' guns have
the same purpose to smash the
enemy his ships, tanks, instal
lations or personnel by deliv
ering a projectile on the target
Ich has its limitations of
range, accuracy, velocity and
rate of fire, and each has its
advantages in military operations.
A gun can hurl its projectile
with greater velocity, at a speed
of nearly 3,000 feet per second.
Its limitations are those of
range, and heavy recoil, which
requ;res a heavy, relatively
complicated and expensive
mount structure. A rocket does
not'impart a great velocity to its
projectile, but its launching de
, vice is light, simple and inex-
pensive and there is no sub
stantial recoil. This is of obvi
ous advantage particularly in
increasing aviation firepower.
No present day airplane can
mount a five-inch gun but
planes are carrying five-inch
rockets and can. carry larger
ones.

Sookane. Wash., Jan. 27 (U.R)
A bandit kidnapped a Spokane
police officer from a prowl car
this afternoon and forced him
to be an unwilling accomplice
to an uncusseccfu) $1,200 cigar
store holduD.
"This is a stick-up," Prowl Car
Officer W. C. Schubbe kept
whispering to bystanders, but
they, seeing Scubbe's uniform,
thought he was kidding.
Schubbe wasn't kidding. His
own revolver was being pointed
at him from underneath the ban
dit's coat.
W. C. Cannon, a clerk in the
store, also knew it was no joke.
He had read the bandit's note
demanding money or "someone
will get hurt."
As Mrs. P. M. Jacoy, wife of
the ' manager, was scooping
$1,200 into a sack provided by
the bandit, Cannon slugged the
man from behind with a milk
bottle.
Schubbe dived for his gun and
the bandit fired two shots. One
of them struck Alice Goldsby,
20, a store waitress, but she was
not seriously hurt.
Schubbe, Cannon and the now-
alerted bystanders overpowered
the bandit, who was booked for
robbery as John James Bullard,
an ex-convict from Walla Walla
penitentiary.
Schubbe said the bandit
jumped aboard his prowl car
and used a concealed beer bot
tle "gun" to obtain Schubbe's
revolver. Then he forced the
officer to drive him to the cigar
store and enter beside him.
