IS NAZI PLAN FOR
Try to Concentrate Strength
on Front Southeast of
Vienna North to Baltic.
Br Tied Scherff
United Press Correspondent
Washington. Jan. 28. U.fi)
Military quarters said today it
is becoming increasingly clear
that the Germans plan to meet
Russia's great winter offensive
by concentrating all available
strength on a shortened oeiense
line beginning southeast of
Vienna and extending north to
the Baltic sea.
Such a battle line would cut
in half the length of the present
eastern front, which has its
southern flank in the Lata Bala
ton region and extends more
than 1,000 miles to Tilsit.
Best Terrain '
Experts here said concen
tration of. strength in the 500
mile Vienna-Baltic Una offered
the German army its only possi
ble chance of stemming the red
advances. The best defensive
terrain left the enemy is to be
found along this line.
If the Germans are abl to
take advantage of the geograph
ical feature, the front will run
east of Vienna to protect that
city from capture. It then would
extend through the rough Bes-
kid and Sudeten mountains to
the Silesian and Pomeranian
plains where parts of the Oder
river and numerous lakes could
ba incorporated into its defen
sive features. The northern flank
en the Baltic sea would prob
ably be in the region of the city
of Kolberg.
The front would pais about
90 miles east of Berlin.
It was noted that the'wehr
macht stopped the last Russian
, offensive by similar shorten
ing of its defense line. The same
was true In the western front
when the Nazis found they could
not hold France and the low
lands. Affect East Front
When the Germans adopt this
line for a probable desperate
last ditch stand, it was said, they
will be forced to make adjust
ments to the eastern front in
southern Europe. Although these
might not be necessary immedi
ately, some sort of defenses
i would be called for in the Adri
atic sea area to protect the east
flank of the enemy divisions
fighting in Italy-l-at least until
it it decided whether or not to
withdraw then to more easily
defended positions In the Alps.
Thii was held as possible in view
of the urgent need for troops on
more vital fronts.
, New proof of Germany's criti
cal shortage of troops and its
fear of the Russian offensive
' came with the disclosure that
soma Nazi divisions are ' being
hurriedly pulled out of the west
ern front. k
American airmen within two
days reported attacking 165
German trains attempting to
travel toward Hamburg and
Dusseldorf. These are enough, if
closely packed, to carry three
Infantry divisions. .
The fact that they were trav
eling by day, a risky venture, is
considered still another indica
tion of the seriousness with
which the Nazi high command
views the red drive.
