oil supply, 15th air force stratr
agist pointed out today.
They described Breslau as the
center of a mining and manu
facturing industry which prob
ably Is leu damaged by bomb
ing than any other Important
industrial area in Germany.
When the Russians move
through Silesia they will see
evidence of the work done by
the 15th air force similar to
that done in Rumania and Hun
gary where a long string of oil
plants and storage plant have
been knocked out or damaged.
Push Battle of Oil
In the last year the Allied air
forces have devoted great at
tention to the battle of oil. For
'instance the 15th In many
.months concentrated half or
more of its effort on pushing
home the attack to cut down
Germany's oil mid gasoline
supply.
Eighteen months ago It was
estimated that Germany's cur
rent oil supply came one-third
' from Rumania, one-third from
synthetic plants and one-third
from crude oil produced in the
Reich, Austria, Hungary, and
Poland.
The Rumanian supplies have
been lost. Most of the crude oil
fields in Hungary are gone and
the remaining smaller supplies
ef Austria, Germany, and Po
land are now threatened.
All 13 of Germany's major
synthetio plants have been
bombed repeatedly.
The Slleslan - cluster of syn
thetio plants produces about 35
to 50 per cent of Germany's to
tal output. As a result of heavy
bombings In November and De
cember it is estimated that
their total production has been
cut to about one-tenth of capacity.
That was accomplished de
spite constantly stronger Ger
man defenses, chiefly flak belts
nd smoke screens and in
creased employment of radar.
Oil plants which a year ago had
SO to 50 flak guns today have
more than 300.
Strategists regard the loss to
Germany of Silesia and the Im
portant industrial triangle of
Poland around Krakow as sec
ond In importance only to the
Ruhr and Saar regions.
Silesia has long furnished
Vienna and Munich with most
of their coal for industrial and
domestic uses.
Shortage of oil recently has
sharply reduced the employ
ment of the Luftwaffe which is
estimated to have 2,000 first
line fighters but employs them
only when conditions are ex
tremely favorable.

league baseball?
Not Joe DIMaggio, not Buzz
Arlett, not Babe Herman and
probably aot any one of a half
dozen other names which might
come to the average fan s mind.
"The finest hitter I've seen,"
says the Veteran Charles Gra
ham, owner of the San Francisco
Seals, "was Paul Waner, who
came to me from Oklahoma.
"True, lots of the boys com
piled better averages than Wan
er. But Paul had the finest eyes
in the game and he could hit
squarely any ball ho could
reach."
Waner, of course, went on to
prove his ability by playing
championship baseball in the
majors over a long period of
years. In a reminiscent mood
Oraham recalled bis introduction
to Paul.
"Waner had come to us from
Oklahoma with a bunch of clip
pings saying he had won 48
games as a pitcher in sandlot
oaseail.
"Well, the first time we used
him was as a pinch-hitter, and
Tom Hughes was on the mound
for Los Angles, leading us 2-0,
with two down in the ninth
"Hughes had the boys eating
out of his hand, but then a cou
pie of our men got on and we
sent In Paul to hit.
"The first ball pitched Waner
reached out and clouted against
the outfield screen but the
ball, instead of dropping back
was hit with such force that it
went tight through for a home
run to give us a 3-2 victory."

The committee for economic de
velopment proposed today that
congress enact a program calling
for expenditure of more than
$700,000,000 in each of the first
two years following the end of
the war in Europe to care for the
unemployed.
The proposal was contained in
a new CED research report by
Richard A. Lester, Duke univer
sity economics professor. Con
gress, he said, should "delay no
longer" in making more ade
quate provision for reconversion
employment so that the regular
sessions of 44 state legislatures
can take appropriate co-operative
action early this year,'
