son, Jack M. Hancock, 26, civil'

since the latter part of Decem
ber 1941, when Wake Island fell
to the enemy, was received yes
terday by Mr. and Mrs. Melvln
C. Hancock ot Gold Hill. The
couple received form card
with a short typewritten mes
sage signed In their son s hand
writing. Mr, and Mrs, Hancock had
been Informed by the navy that
their son waa a prisoner, but no
message had been received di
rectly from him until yesterday.

recent issues of Red Cross pris
oner of war publications stated
that but - two messages were
known to come out of this camp,
and they believe this to be the
third. ,
The message read ' "Dear
Mother: I am fine. Hope you
are the same. Where Is Sis and
the babies and how are they?
Hope war will be over soon, so
I can return home. Good luck.
Will be home some day. Love,

Hancock had been on the
island for about a year when
war broke out and the Island
fell into the hands ot the Jap
anese on Dec. 22 ot 1941. Be
fore coming a civilian employee
of the navy he was employed by
the Pacific Portland Cement
company in Gold Hill.
His brother, Fred W. Han
cock, Is a seaman second class
in the navy and his sister, Mrs.
Betty H. Gnrrels, whose hus
band was killed In action with
the Fifth Army In Italy, recently
enlisted In the Women's Army
corps. The sister referred to In
the message is Mrs, Georgia
Murray of Gold Hill whose hus
band, Sgt. Lou B. Murray, is
serving in Italy with the 91st
Infantry Division.

March of Dimes appeal is as
surance that no victim of in
fantile paralysis will go un
cared for, regardless of age, race,
